Description
Background:
(SOEPA) is a local non-profit organization in the Dominican Republic comprised of community members of Paraso, Barahona. Their current goals include the implementation of an ecotourism project in collaboration with the communities of Cachote, Paraiso and San Rafael. The project seeks to preserve forest bidiversity, prevent deforestration and destruction of three important rivers, develop a community ectourism business and generate funds to elevate the three communitites. The area of the project lies 1200 meters above sea level, 30 minutes up into the cloud forest from the beautiful Caribbean Sea.
Duties:
Under the direction of the President, the intern will coordinate community volunteers to finish building the visitors center, look outs, and interpretive trails; participate and collaborate in planning meetings with technical advisors on the project; assist and participate in training workshops; assist with the development of a website; contribute to the development of educational materials and help with the internal strengthening of SOEPA.
Duration: 3 to 6 months, or longer Number of Positions: 2-4 per year
Qualifications:
Academic Background: Graduate students with any of the following majors are encouraged to apply: Non Profit Management, Biology, Spanish, Ecotourism, Natual Resource Management or related majors. Skills/Experience: web design, construction, meeting oraganization, training and facilitation.
Language Requirement: Spanish proficiency equivalent to three years of university study is required. The more Spanish the better. Previous experience abroad is helpful. Other Requirements: Must enjoy working in the outdoors with minimal accommodations.
Compensation:
Currently no monetary stipend is available.
Accommodation: SOEPA will provide a small apartment within the SOEPA building in the town of Paraiso. No cooking facilities are available however meals will be arranged at welcoming community members homes.
Cost of Living: Incidentals and local recreation $50-100/month.
