With joint sponsorship from the Graham Foundation and the University of Michigan (U-M), the Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute is a collaborative partnership of 9 U-M schools and colleges. The Graham Institute fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration to create and disseminate knowledge and to offer solutions related to complex environmental sustainability issues.

Position Overview: 

Integrated Assessment (IA) is the core research activity of the Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute at the University of Michigan. The Institute is presently seeking an outstanding and seasoned candidate to serve as our Integrated Assessment Program Director.

This individual will report directly to the Institute Director, and will be responsible for designing, implementing and overseeing an effective IA program that will span multiple active assessments at any given time. The incumbent will be a highly motivated, organized, and outgoing individual with a strong understanding of and experience with Integrated Assessment, and its application to environmental sustainability challenges on wide geographic scales (local to global).

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, design, implement, guide, and oversee day-to-day operations for the IA Program.
  • Responsible for administrative, financial, personnel and planning aspects of IA activity.
  • Oversee research staff engaged in day-to-day operations.
  • In collaboration with faculty research teams, participate as skilled individual contributor on IA projects, conducting research as appropriate, with results used in broader IA research projects.
  • Work closely with all IA program participants to educate and train them in IA techniques, processes, capabilities, limitations and outcomes.
  • Consult regularly with Institute personnel, IA research teams, and engaged stakeholders to refine or adapt methodologies to fit specific research requirements.
  • Design and implement effective methodologies for data gathering, synthesis and analysis.
  • Investigate, modify and apply new procedures, techniques or applications of technology, integrating new findings into IA program design.
  • Oversee development of data collection instruments, monitor integrity of data collection and use of protocols and procedures. Conduct data analysis as appropriate.
  • Participate in writing proposals, reports for funding agencies and articles for publication.
  • Present results of IA projects at professional meetings and other forums.
  • Administer involvement of visiting scholars, researchers and fellows in IA program activity.
  • Monitor expenditures of funds and grants.
  • Participate as an active and engaged member of the Institute Leadership Team.
  • May collaborate on new curricular offerings and course instruction.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a Doctorate related to environmental sustainability with 10+ years of experience in a comparable role, or Master's related to environmental sustainability with 15+ years of related experience in a comparable role. Strong experience designing and leading a small research program and managing research staff.

Significant experience with stakeholder engagement-based methods of developing or applying natural or social science to environmental problems. Extensive knowledge of and experience with Integrated Assessment methodology. Strong record of publications is preferred.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize among competing goals; facility with MS applications, e.g., Word, Excel, required.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Salary:$85,000.00 - $100,000.00/Year
