Clatsop Community College, a public, 2-year institution, located in Astoria, Oregon, serving students and communities in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington, has an opening for a part-time, temporary Sustainable Energy Instructor beginning November 2010.

Position Overview:

Under general supervision of the Vice President of Instruction, works collaboratively to provide sustainable energy instruction for community college students. This is a grant funded position, and is solely based on grant availability.

Reports to: Vice President of Instruction

Responsibilities:

  1. Design and implement instructional activities in sustainable energy in lab and classroom settings, using sound instructional delivery techniques and at times which meet the needs of students and supporting agencies (e.g., on-line, day, evening, weekends)
  2. Provide curricular guidance in sustainable energy and related business areas
  3. Works with faculty colleagues to develop, implement, evaluate and periodically review and revise the organizing framework, learning outcomes, and curriculum of the college
  4. Evaluate student achievement of identified learning outcomes and assign grades according to college policies and standards.
  5. Provide for student evaluations of teaching and learning effectiveness
  6. Provide academic advising to students
  7. Participate in determining academic policies and procedures of the institution and other appropriate faculty activities of the College
  8. Maintain office hours
  9. Maintain professional competence and job qualifications
  10. Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possess a Master's degree in environmental studies, environmental engineering, sustainable energy or related subject area; or
  • Possess a Baccalaureate degree in environmental studies or related subject area and a minimum of 3 years of recent full-time verifiable work experience in the subject area to be taught; or
  • 7 years of professional work experience related to sustainable energy, environmental engineering or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of instructional methods appropriate to student achievement of outcomes in sustainable energy and related industry areas
  • Knowledge of current issues, trends, and research in sustainable energy (wind, solar, wave) and related industry areas such as electrical systems, building systems, HVAC, mechanical power systems, basic hydraulics, and control systems.
  • Interpersonal communication skills to successfully relate to students, staff, and the public
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Skill in computer operations including word processing
  • Skill in promoting critical thinking in a variety of educational settings
  • Ability to develop valid and reliable student achievement assessments
  • Demonstrated experience in team approaches to problem solving
  • Ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and organize work to complete assigned duties
  • At a minimum, it is required of every employee to be able to: use a computer terminal to log in to e-mail; read and create e-mail messages; access the intranet system to find and complete forms and read institutional documents; access the internet and the College's web site; use the calendaring function of the College's e-mail system; and utilize department specific data entry and/or work order software to facilitate departmental tasks.

Compensation: $23,970 (.55% of full-time)-with benefits
