Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) is private for-profit company recognized internationally for its third-party evaluation and certification programs. Founded in 1984, SCS offers technical expertise that spans a wide cross-section of the economy including food and agriculture, forestry, coffee, fisheries, energy, consumer products, manufacturing and retailing, and the home improvement and construction sectors. SCS is accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), and the USDA National Organic Program (NOP).
Position Overview:
The Program Associate carries out a range of professional activities primarily associated with Greenhouse Gas (GHG) verification. "Carbon Footprint" and Forest Carbon Offset verification activities are conducted under an array of programs including CCAR, CCX, VCS and CCBA. Work is to be conducted from SCS' Point Richmond office.
Responsibilities:
- General Administration: Assist with tasks related to the business management of the program; manage a consistent work flow of scheduling, written notifications, and record-keeping; organize and continually maintain data management systems; maintain current files for all certified clients and track client leads; provide support to the Program Manager in communicating with clients and consultants.
- Marketing/business development: Assist Program Manager in preparing budgets and proposals for new verification projects. Provide responses to parties interested in GHG verification services.
- General Verification Support: Oversee steps of initial verification and surveillance assessments including assembling, training, and scheduling verification teams; notify and consult with stakeholders; plan assessment itineraries; review, edit, and finalize reports.
- Quality Control Related to ISO Accreditation (e.g., tracking of latest GHG and ISO developments and coordination of programmatic changes to keep SCS in compliance).
- Auditor: Independently, or with teams of up to 5 professionals, assess management practices of private and publicly managed forests relative to the GHG and verification standards. GHG Entity Inventory Verification auditing will also be a requirement. Assessments take place on operations throughout the world and involve document review, on-site assessment of field activities, interviews, and reporting;
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum Bachelors degree in forestry or related natural resources field;
- Preferred at least 4 years of professional experience in a related field;
- Familiarity with GHG standards strongly preferred
- Excellent writing and communication skills;
- Superlative organizational skills;
- Computer skills- proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel required, FileMaker preferred;
- Ability to work in a face paced, deadline driven environment;
- Initiative and ability to work independently.
