Position Overview
The primary focus of this position is the development of
technical and feasibility analysis to support internal and external project teams.
The successful candidate shall demonstrate the ability to work under guided supervision and work well with diverse project types, MEP systems, groups and interests. Project work entails execution of self-directed research, analytical activities and preparation of technical reports and presentations using energy modeling and other performance simulation tools. This position offers growth potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Presents results of complex analytic modeling to lead a design team through an integrated design process and the adoption of advanced active and passive systems
- Perform energy modeling and analysis using DOE II compliant software, preferable eQuest and IES software platforms on large, complex buildings with advanced energy features, including central plants and manufacturing processes
- Perform technical analysis in support of project teams including: calculations that support proof of concept, energy and daylighting simulations, water balance modeling, materials recommendations and drawing and specification review
- Compilation of Building Performance Portfolio data suitable for submission to GRESB, CDP, and other annual corporate reporting activities
- Develops and maintains office standards for modeling deliverables and mentors staff to follow them
- Perform internal quality control reviews of energy modeling deliverables authored by others
- Maintains the company's intellectual property regarding energy modeling process, compilation of best practices, the company's suite of proprietary excel based tools
- Performs Total Cost of Ownership studies that account for first cost, operational costs, utility savings, and environmental KPIs
- Author technical reports, create presentations and other client-facing memoranda that present logical, clear, and evidence based arguments that drive project teams towards sustainable outcomes
- Prepare and submit EA credit 1 LEED documentation to the Green Building Certification Institute
- Prepare and submit code compliance models per local jurisdictional requirements
- Internal expert resource for industry energy standards and their relation to energy modeling procedures, specifically ASHRAE 90.1 2007-2012, ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G, and LEED EAc1 for all LEED rating systems. Experience with CalGreen, Title 24, Washington DC Green Codes, NYSERDA, and Core Performance, a plus.
Qualfications
- Expert knowledge of eQuest modeling software
- 3+ years of experience with energy modeling software, including EnergyPro, Energy+, Trace, IES or other industry standard software, and software manipulation to produce solutions within problem criteria
- Experience in modeling medium to large scale office buildings and mid-rise and high-rise multifamily residential (apartments/condos) for predictive annual energy use
- Knows the difference between investigative vs. compliance modeling, can assign modeling procedures, and set client expectations accordingly
- Strong communication skills with ability to draft technical reports, white papers, and other business communications with minimal supervision
- Experience developing and implementing sustainability concepts and strategies as demonstrated through actual project or program work, Net Zero Energy or Living Building Challenge project experience a plus
- LEED specific energy modeling and ASHRAE's BEMP certification a plus, LEED Accredited Professional or LEED project experience preferred
- Experience in whole building design, including technical evaluation as demonstrated by either:
- 2+ years professional experience with demonstrated progression in building design with an emphasis on advanced MEP systems, or
- An advanced degree in engineering, architecture or building science with a focus on green building, energy or building science, and with practical experience gained through internships, fellowships, or similar on-the-job training
- Background in HVAC mechanical design preferred
- Expert user of Microsoft Excel including pivot tables, VLookups, and other advanced functionality
- A sense of humor and a knack for innovation and problem solving
