Responsibilities
The San Francisco Estuary Institute, an environmental research non-profit in Oakland, is seeking to hire a Graphic Designer in its Information Technology group with expertise in layout and production in print and online. This person will work with the science and support staff to create compelling communication materials for a range of audiences.
The hire will implement the SFEI publishing process beginning at the developmental editing stage and will have the opportunity to work in a variety of media such as reports, newsletters, the web, presentation materials, journal and magazine articles and science posters.
Required Characteristics
- Three years experience in related work
- Demonstrated eye for design: use text, photos and other graphic elements to create attractive, professional designs from scratch
- Friendly manner, assertive when necessaryinteractions with a variety of staff members are necessarily frequent and occasionally under pressure of deadline
- Organized and attentive to detailtypically, multiple projects are underway simultaneously
- Strong writing skills
Required Application / Technical Skills
- Advanced skills in a page layout application (strong preference for InDesign and/or QuarkXPress on the Macintosh)
- Advanced skills in graphics applications (strong preference for Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop; other useful graphics applications include Canvas, charting and data manipulation in Excel, and SigmaPlot)typical tasks include preparing and adapting charts, tables, photos, and design elements for use in attractive and engaging print and online scientific publications
- Able to understand and hand-edit HTML and CSS, and codes in keeping with browser-independent web standards
- Hire should be comfortable with both the Windows and Macintosh operating systems, and will likely be based on a Macintosh G5
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Desirable, but not Required

- Editing technical writing for clarity and brevity
- Interest and ability in translating and distilling technical writing to express key relevance for less technical audiences
- Background or experience in the sciences, particularly environmental sciences
- Experience with or knowledge of the legislation and/or agencies involved in the management of the nation's aquatic environments
- Experience in interacting with print and broadcast mediathere may be potential for the position to expand in this direction in the future
- Formal training in public presentation and/or communications
- Knowledge of web server administration, web content management systems and other web-related technologies, particularly open-source technologies
- Knowledge of cartography and/or GIS
