Description

Background:

The State Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs) speak for the public interest against the special interests, on issues in the news and below the surface.

As public interest watchdog organizations, PIRGs uncover dangers to public health and well-being and fight to end them, using the time-tested tools of investigative research, media exposes, grassroots organizing, advocacy, and litigation. They deliver consistent, results-oriented public interest activism to achieve real change that improves the quality of our environment, of our government, and, ultimately, of individual lives.

The State PIRGs are hiring a Grantseeking Associate to fundraise the necessary resources to meet our goals.

Duties:

Working with the National Development Department of the State PIRGs, the Grantseeking Associate will do public interest fundraising and become part of the team campaigning to protect the environment and public interest. The Grantseeking Associate will work side-by-side with the organization's development staff to assist the grantseeking efforts of environmental and public interest attorneys, advocates, organizers, and scientists across the country.

The Grantseeking Associate's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Grantseeking Assistance - working with staff across the country to develop and implement strategic grantseeking plans to raise money for environmental and public interest projects;
  • Foundation Targeting - researching, identifying and assigning appropriate foundation targets for state PIRG and affiliated project staff;
  • Proposal Writing and Editing - drafting and editing proposals on environmental, consumer and good government issues for PIRG and affiliated organizations;
  • Outreach- conduct outreach to individual funders on behalf of the organization through phone, meeting, and other personalized contacts;
  • Clearinghouse - helping to maintain an extensive database on current and prospective funders and provide information to grantseekers about these foundations upon request.

Qualifications:

Candidates must possess excellent written and verbal skills and should have experience in database management.

Experience grantwriting with a public interest advocacy organization or working on political campaigns is preferred.

Candidates for this position should have two or more years of relevant professional experience, postcollege. Relevant experience includes (but is not limited to) working in political, policy, legal, journalistic, or government settings.

Advanced degrees, including a JD or masters in related fields, may count toward a candidate's professional experience.

Salary & Benefits:

Salary for this position ranges from $24,000 up, depending on the quality of the applicant and past work experience. An outstanding benefits package includes health care coverage, educational loan assistance, a retirement plan, paid vacation and sick days, parental leave, and a dependent care assistance program. Opportunities for advancement, travel, and additional training are available.
