Description

WPI's Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division (IGSD) seeks a full-time faculty member whose teaching, advising, and scholarly expertise will support WPI's unique undergraduate society-technology project requirement.

Over half of WPI students complete at least one project overseas before graduation. This unusual outreach is driven by WPI's project-based curriculum, especially its unique requirement that every undergraduate complete a nine-credit-hour project that confronts an open-ended problem at the interface between society and technology. Project topics are proposed by agencies and organizations in the US and around the world, and typically involve issues such as sustainability, appropriate technology, capacity building, and economic development.

Position Overview:

This faculty member will take the form of advising student projects both on campus and at locations around the globe; classroom teaching; and collaboration with other faculty and staff in scholarship and outreach.

Over time, this person will be expected to become engaged in the administration of WPI's global network of project centers. The Division has a long-term commitment to this position, which is non tenure-track, 9 months per year.

Qualifications:

The Division seeks individuals with a PhD in International Studies or Development, Geography, History, Psychology, Sociology, Education (with a specialty in either cross- cultural, project-based, or experiential education), or a related field.

The successful candidate will contribute intellectually and through teaching to an academic program focused on critical thinking, persuasive writing, and cross-cultural learning.

Candidates must be comfortable with collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and research. In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrate experience in teaching qualitative social science research methods (or applying them through scientific research), and in conducting and guiding applied, field-based research. Experience with corporate or public sector decision making, international development projects, administration of teaching and research programs, or with cross-cultural training (such as the Peace Corps) would also be valuable, as would foreign language skills.

To Apply:

Send a resume, descriptions of teaching and research interests, and the names, telephone numbers, and email addresses of at least three references by email or postal mail with "Faculty Search" as the subject.
