Description
OwnEnergy partners with landowners to develop renewable energy projects, with an initial focus on 10-80 MW wind energy projects. Our partners take an active role in the development and installation process and in return they are provided with a significant ownership stake in the resulting renewable energy project.
By teaming up with landowners and local developers to develop mid-size wind farms, OwnEnergy capitalizes on the converging trends of consumers' desire for clean energy and distributed generation.
Position Overview:
Our Company is seeking to hire an energetic, passionate and detail-focused individual with at least one year of experience conducting wind resource assessments, analyzing meteorological tower data, or working with GIS software. This role will consist of two different, but strongly integrated, disciplines: GIS & Wind Resource.
This position requires a very detail orientated and focused individual, who is self-motivated, open to learn, creative and a team player. This individual will report directly to the Director of Wind Resource and GIS, and support the entire wind development team.
The GIS and Wind Resource Analyst will be based in our headquarters located in Brooklyn, NY. One to two weeks of travel per year is required for this position.
Responsibilities:
GIS
- The GIS and Wind Resource Analyst will be responsible for screening prospective wind farm sites using the Company' s proprietary GIS tools and databases, and creating related output maps.
- Other tasks include, but are not limited to: updating and expanding the internal GIS database; creating turbine layouts and setback/constraints maps; managing access road and collection line layers and managing land-ownership parcel information.
Wind Resource
- In this part of the role, the GIS and Wind Resource Analyst will be responsible for monitoring and keeping track of the Company' s meteorological towers and the related documentation.
- On a weekly basis, this individual will review and quality control all meteorological tower data, and advise of any instrument issues/failures.
- This position will also entail conducting full wind resource assessment studies using onsite wind data, long-term reference station data from a number of difference sources, the Company' s proprietary wind resource software and other 3rd party software.
General Responsibilities
- The GIS and Wind Resource Analyst will manage the internal inventory of power curves provided by turbine manufacturers, and create and optimize turbine layouts for different turbines.
- The GIS and Wind Resource Analyst should have a general understanding about how to successfully conduct a wind resource campaign and/or work with GIS tools.
Sample Tasks
- Conduct GIS Desktop Study for prospective wind farm site, considering the onsite wind resource, environmental and aviation/FAA/radar factors, setback constraints, topography, exposure, and access to transmission.
- Conduct a full wind resource assessment study for a specific wind farm site, with several onsite met towers, ultimately to derive a Net Capacity Factor estimate for several turbines, with different hub heights and layouts.
- Collect, process and quality control raw meteorological wind data.
- Use our internal GIS system, proactively screen and locate optimal wind farm sites throughout the US.
- Locate all residential structures and roads within a project footprint, and generate setback constraints map.
- Based on onsite wind data, topography and setback constrains, optimize a turbine layout to minimize losses.
- Download the most recent GIS layers for protected/endangered species, airports, land control, etc.
Qualifications:
- Ability to live and work in the New York City Area.
- 1+ years of wind resource and/or GIS experience.
- Bachelors degree (or higher) in physics, engineering, mathematics, geography or other similar quantitative field.
- Familiarity with the following software programs a plus: Pitney Bowes MapInfo, Global Mapper, Windographer, WindPro, NRG Symphonie Software, Google Earth, Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Ability to operate at an extremely detailed level in a high intensity environment.
