~ NYC Parks is the steward of approximately 29,000 acres of land - 14 percent of New York City - including more than 5,000 individual properties ranging from Coney Island Beach and Central Park to community gardens and Greenstreets. ~

We operate more than 800 athletic fields and nearly 1,000 playgrounds, 550 tennis courts, 66 public pools, 48 recreational facilities, 17 nature centers, 13 golf courses, and 14 miles of beaches.

We care for 1,200 monuments and 23 historic house museums. We look after 650,000 street trees, and two million more in parks. We are New York City's principal providers of recreational and athletic facilities and programs. We are home to free concerts, world-class sports events, and cultural festivals.

Position Overview

The New York City Parks Department is transforming what was once the world’s largest landfill into a sweeping 2200 acre park in one of the most ambitious public works projects undertaken in New York City. The Freshkills Park Development team is seeking a motivated and energetic candidate to deliver the park’s seasonal calendar of activities & events.

The Programming Associate will spend time engaging New Yorkers of all ages with hiking, kayaking, canoeing, birding, environmental education, presentations, arts events, and tours – for a one of a kind park. The park itself is a message of sustainability, recycling, and ecological restoration and the Programming Associate will design and deliver programs that reflect these topics.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure park facilities (buildings and cars) are in good order and maintain equipment.
  • Assist in planning, organizing and supervising recreational programs and volunteer service projects at Freshkills Park.
  • Assist in organizing and conducting special events at Freshkills Park including races, sporting events, arts events, and festivals.
  • Organize, schedule, and assist on field trips for 6-12 grade students; and record participation.
  • Assist in the operations needs of summer intern projects on site.
  • Recruit volunteers, community groups and vendors for various events or activities and direct their efforts.
  • Distribute promotional and educational materials about the park and upcoming events.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in physical science, urban planning, or environmental studies or related.
  • Proven outdoor education or leadership experience; physical ability to hike, kayak in challenging conditions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite experience a plus.
  • Ability to work a schedule including many evenings and weekends.
  • Valid New York State driver's license.

Additional Information

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, and Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required for all other candidates.

Fees:

  • Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee of $54.00.
  • Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to an $87.00 background check fee.
