Fresh Kills Landscape Architect/Environmental Specialist

The Fresh Kills Park project is working to transform the 2,200-acre Fresh Kills Landfill on the Arthur Kill waterfront of Staten Island into a new public park over the next 30 years.

The City of New York has conducted a master planning process for Fresh Kills Landfill that resulted in an illustrative park plan, also known as the Draft Master Plan. While nearly forty-five percent of the site was used for landfill operations, the remainder of the site is composed of wetlands, open waterways, and unfilled lowland areas.

New York's new parkland at Fresh Kills will be one of the most ambitious public works projects in the world, combining state of the art ecological restoration techniques with extraordinary settings for recreation, public art, and environmental education programming.

Responsibilities:

• Under direction, with great latitude for the exercise of independent judgment or action, perform highly difficult and technically complex landscape architectural work.
• Supervise the coordination of project-specific interagency issues, such as permits, filings and approvals.
• Analyze project data, research best practices and identify systemic bottlenecks.
• Provide assistance to team members in anticipating and resolving design and construction issues.
• Plan, assign and review the work of subordinates, prepare progress reports and represent the agency in relations with City and regulatory agencies, contractors and their representatives, consultants and the general public.
• Prepare, or supervise the preparation of the basic design plan, or significant or complex portions of the basic design plan, for major projects for the construction, remodeling, operation, maintenance or repair of public works, structures or installations.

Qualifications:

• A valid New York State registration as a Landscape Architect and four years of full-time landscape architectural experience.
• A master's degree in landscape architecture from an accredited college will be accepted as equivalent to one year of full-time landscape architectural experience.
• Strong familiarity with urban landscapes (in particular New York City) and Northeast plant types, construction experience, knowledge of AutoCAD and valid driver license preferred.
• Education Requirements: Master's or Bachelor's degree
• Years of Experience: At least 4 years
• Travel Required: TBD

Preferred Qualification Requirements:

• Experience with interdisciplinary coordination during design.
• Project management experience managing multiple projects, contracts and staff.
• Knowledge of any/all of the following specialized disciplines: brownfields, landfills, sustainable/"green" design, ecological restoration, conservation, ADA/universal design concepts, horticulture, urban design, public art and architecture.
• Computer literacy, including knowledge of Word, Excel and CAD.
• A commitment to teamwork and an integrated approach to project delivery.

Compensation: Full time Salary: $62,797-$75,000 (based on experience).
