The Center's administrative architecture is horizontal servant leadership with Senior Staff managing specific programs/projects while providing support to colleagues on other programs/projects. In any one day a staff member may switch from visionary to manager to technician keeping work interesting and fun.
The Center operates two divisions; a consulting division providing information and market development services to public and private sector clients, and a commercial services division, providing organic landscaping and river and wildlife habitat restoration to landowners in Central Virginia.
Position Overview
The Virginia Community Wood Energy Program (CWEP) is a multi-year effort to stimulate institutional-scale use of local woody biomass for thermal energy (space, hot water and process heat) in the public and private sector.
The program is funded by grants from state and federal agencies and is managed by the Center for Natural Capital. A task to assess the impact of social and cultural dispositions on the use of wood energy is one of the CWEP'S deliverables to partner agencies.
The Center for Natural Capital seeks to hire a contractor to provide an applied research report on social and cultural factors associated with consideration of use of wood energy for private and public institutions. Work will be performed during the winter and spring of 2016.
Responsibilities
Scope of Work
- Review accomplishments and challenges/opportunities of CWEP program. This includes review of documents, websites, and personal interviews with CWEP staff and partners.
- Assess attitudes towards the use of wood energy.
- Conduct personal visits and telephone interviews with existing and potential wood energy users/suppliers/vendors - contact information provided by CWEP staff.
- Gather published papers, articles, and commentaries on attitudes and cultural biases toward the use of wood energy.
- Document findings through an article designed for publication in professional publications with interest in biomass.
- Provide recommendations to the CWEP on methods/processes to reduce social barriers in the adoption of institutional-scale wood energy.
Compensation and Terms: This opportunity is a temporary contract position with the Center. A lump sum will be negotiated with selected contractor. A portion of the contract amount may be provided at the start date if needed. Virginia or mid-Atlantic-based contractor is preferred.
