Position Overview:

Ash Creek Forest Management LLC is seeking a Forestry Technician/Crew Foreman with skills and experience to assist Ash Creek Forest Management LLC with plant installation, maintenance, management and monitoring of ecological restoration projects in the greater Portland Metro area.

Responsibilities:

Assist Ash Creek Forest Management professional staff, customers and clients in all phases of and activities related to environmental restoration, reforestation and forest management by coordinating, facilitating and supervising the daily work of the Forestry/Restoration Crew.

General Job Duties and Description:

  • Post required signage, record and report materials used when conducting herbicide application
  • Conduct pre-commercial thinning or assist with prescribed or pile burning as needed
  • Use maps or aerial photos to establish, mark or post project or property boundaries when requested
  • Follow instructions from professional staff, customers and clients
  • Monitor selected projects to document density, mortality and other forestry related observations
  • Install bare-root trees and shrubs, cuttings, container plants, plugs and bulbs
  • Maintain planted trees and shrubs using hand and power tools
  • Control non-native species with herbicides
  • Collect, prepare and sow native plant seeds
  • Operate, or facilitate the operation of various pieces of machinery (tractor, truck, ATV)
  • Facilitate daily delivery of all required materials and equipment to project sites
  • Provide summary reports to supervisor
  • Maintain crew vehicles, tools and equipment in good working order
  • Organize tool and herbicide storage facilities
  • Hold and maintain valid driver's and herbicide applicator licenses
  • Perform other forestry related work as assigned

Supervisory Duties:

  • Serve as an Ash Creek Forest Management representative during field work
  • Record, prepare and submit Forestry/ Restoration Crew Member time sheets daily
  • Discuss with and train Forestry/Restoration Crew Members in the safe operation of power tools and application of herbicides
  • Coordinate activities of and supervise Forestry/Restoration Crew Members

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work outdoors across uneven terrain during inclement weather
  • Spanish and English language proficiency
  • Knowledge of crew organization and leadership tactics
  • Experience supervising herbicide application, recording and reporting materials used
  • Experienced with bareroot, plug and container plant handling and installation
  • Knowledge of common forestry herbicides and seasonal timing of treatments
  • Chainsaw, mower, and ATV operation, troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Self-motivation and the ability to provide eight to ten hours of manual labor plus travel time
  • Ability to safely lift 80 pounds
  • Strong math skills and organizational ability
  • Valid Oregon driver's license and chemical applicator license
  • Education or formal training in natural resource management
  • Computer proficiency
  • Knowledge of native and non-native plants and their respective habitats
  • Knowledge of the greater Portland Metro area
  • Horticultural skills
  • Ability to use GPS units

Compensation: Salary: $35-45,000 per year with 2 weeks paid vacation, plus paid holidays, medical benefits allowance and retirement compensation.

Status and duration: Full-time, dependent upon completion of a 3 month probationary period.
Location: Tigard, Oregon and multiple locations in the Portland, Oregon Metro area
Transportation: Company truck provided primarily from Tigard, Oregon.
