The not-for-profit Monterey Bay Aquarium opened in 1984, and has earned a reputation for being among the world's finest. Located on Monterey's historic Cannery Row and featuring exhibitions that focus on Monterey Bay's diverse habitats and wildlife, it attracts between 1.7 and 2.4 million visitors each year.

The institution's mission is to inspire conservation of the oceans, both through exhibits and through conservation research and advocacy in such areas as sea otters, open-ocean fishes research, marine protected areas, fisheries health and others. More than 80,000 schoolchildren take advantage of the aquarium's free education programs and tours every year.

Position Overview:

The Research Analyst will generate and update Seafood Watch Reports to support the program's sustainable seafood recommendations and internal expertise on top priority seafood species.

Responsibilities: 

  • Compile, synthesize and analyze scientific information on various fisheries operations including peer-reviewed journal articles, stock assessments and other government reports and other reviews of sustainability.
  • Engage in personal contacts with fishery experts, members of industry and non-governmental organizations.
  • Use this information to write or update Seafood Reports in accordance with the Seafood Watch Report format and standards and generate seafood recommendations using the program's sustainability criteria.
  • Record references using Endnote reference software.
  • Submit the Seafood Reports for external scientific review, internal editorial review and revise reports accordingly.
  • Submit reports for posting on the aquarium's public web site.
  • Maintain ongoing expertise on key Seafood Watch priority species.
  • Develop seafood buyer's guides describing sustainable sourcing for key priority wild-caught fishery species
  • Communicate seafood expertise with major seafood buyers, media, and outreach partners.
  • Work in a team environment with Sustainable Seafood Initiative staff, our Board of Scientific Experts and other Monterey Bay Aquarium partner organizations to reach consensus on the seafood recommendations, gather new information and strengthen the scientific rigor of the program.
  • Participate in Seafood Watch activities including giving talks at meetings and other outreach and special events.

Qualifications: 

  • Masters degree in marine ecology, fisheries, or equivalent experience is required.
  • Strong understanding of fish life history characteristics, fish population biology, ecosystem impacts of fishing, fisheries management, stock assessments and emerging issues in marine conservation is critical.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research using primary literature, databases and the Internet is necessary.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including a high comfort level with contacting fisheries experts on a regular basis, are essential.
  • Strong time management skills and multi-tasking skills are important.
  • Knowledge, comfort and proficiency in working with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Endnote and other software are necessary.
