Description

The Agriculture and Land‑Based Training Association (ALBA) is a nonprofit based in California’s Salinas Valley that empowers aspiring and limited‑resource farmers—primarily low‑income and immigrant farmworkers—by providing bilingual education, technical support, and access to a 100‑acre certified organic training farm.

Through its intensive PEPA farmer education course and Organic Farm Incubator program, ALBA equips participants with hands‑on training in organic production, business management, and sustainable farming practices, while offering subsidized land, equipment, and mentorship to help them launch and grow their own organic farm businesses. Since 2001, ALBA has helped establish more than 250 independent farms, the majority Latino‑owned, while fostering environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, and stronger local food systems.

Job Description:

This is where finance meets purpose — a chance to turn numbers into meaningful progress. At the Agriculture and Land- Based Training Association (ALBA), you’ll work closely with a dedicated, mission-driven team while ensuring financial stewardship that supports new farmers and strengthens local food systems. If you are a skilled accounting professional passionate about non-profit work and ready to take ownership of an essential leadership role, we’d love to hear from you.
Since 2001, the Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association (ALBA) has empowered aspiring farmers through education, training, and incubation opportunities. Their 100-acre organic farm incubator provides college-credit training, land access, and mentorship to 35–40 participants annually, helping them build successful farm businesses and contribute to a healthier food system.
ALBA is financially solid, mission-driven, and deeply committed to fostering community and sustainable agriculture. The Finance Director is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for overseeing all financial functions, ensuring compliance with federal and state grant requirements, and providing timely, accurate financial reporting to the Executive Director and Board of Directors. This position requires a detail-oriented, proactive accounting professional who thrives in a non-profit environment.
Note: This is a highly impactful role, with opportunities to shape systems, strengthen reporting, and support ALBA’s mission- driven work.

  • Prepare accurate monthly financial statements, cash forecasts, and present reports to the Board.
  • Lead annual budget preparation and variance analysis.
  • Manage federal, state, and foundation grant reporting (quarterly, semi-annual, annual).

  • Maintain and improve financial tracking systems, including grant coding and cost allocations.
  • Oversee payroll, accounts payable, receivables, bank deposits, and vendor/farmer payments.
  • Coordinate annual audits and work assertively with auditors to ensure timely completion.
  • Support financial planning, including 12-month rolling cash forecasts and investment oversight.
  • Provide cost tracking and reporting for construction and capital projects (e.g., HUD-funded projects with Davis- Bacon compliance).
  • Supervise and guide a program assistant handling basic finance functions.
  • Collaborate with leadership on long-term planning and organizational sustainability.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience.
  • Experience in a non-profit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of non-profit fund accounting and federal grant compliance.
  • Advanced Excel skills for grant and budget tracking (QuickBooks Online experience required).
  • CPA preferred but not required.
  • Experience in auditing, project accounting, or agricultural/farm accounting is highly valued.
  • Excellent communication skills; proactive in engaging with auditors and grant officers.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
