Wellfleet Bay provides peace and unmatched beauty on the hillsides and shoreline overlooking Wellfleet Harbor. 

Extensive trails bring you to a panoramic salt marsh, sandy barrier beach, and pine woodlands, each attracting a wide array of wildlife. The sanctuary features a universally accessible trail and an award-winning "green" nature center with numerous exhibits and aquariums.


Position Overview

Position involves managing all aspects of a long-term diamondback terrapin research project on our sanctuary in Wellfleet with some work at other field sites nearby.

Responsibilities

  • Primary duties are finding, protecting, and monitoring nests of diamondback terrapins on our 800 acre coastal wildlife sanctuary and other sites around Wellfleet;
  • Weighing, measuring, and releasing the hatchlings;
  • Radio tracking box turtles;
  • Supervising one research assistant;
  • Helping to coordinate and oversee the many volunteers who help with the project, and assisting with turtle-oriented public programs for adults and children; and
  • Definitely must be willing and able to manage our large, rambunctious and awesome corps of dedicated volunteers. 

Qualifications

  • Previous experience with herpetology, especially turtles, is preferred for this position;
  • Kayaking skill is a plus;
  • Applicants should have a degree in wildlife biology or management, ecology, zoology, environmental science, biology, or other related field;
  • Applicants should be in good physical condition, be able to spend long hours outside in all weather conditions, be able to lift 40lbs, and transverse varied and sandy terrain;
  • Valid drivers license and a reliable vehicle for driving between sites; and
  • Successful candidates will need to pass a background check (CORI, SORI and driver's.) 

Compensation: Pay is $12-13/hour. Dormitory housing might be available at $30/week. 

Additional Comments

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours.
  • Position runs mid-May through end of October, possibly longer.
