AOI is the premiere provider of Observers to the National Marine Fisheries Service North Pacific Groundfish Observer Program. 

Position Overview

We have an immediate need for North Pacific Groundfish Observers to join our team starting 6/3/19 and 7/8/19.

As an at-sea biologist working aboard U.S.-flagged commercial fishing vessels, you will gather data essential to the sustainability of fisheries resources in Alaska. Observers live and work aboard commercial fishing vessels operating in the Bering Sea and the North Pacific Ocean, identifying fish species, sampling catches to determine their species composition, making estimates of total catch, and collecting age structures and biological data from target species. Following a paid 3-week training in Seattle, new observers fly up to Dutch Harbor, AK for 70-90 day deployments. Observers are guaranteed subsequent deployment opportunities and salary advances.

Note: Start dates are 12/2/19 and 12/26/2019

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in fisheries biology, marine biology, general biology, zoology, or a related natural science. 
  • Observers must have at least one math class, one statistics class, and coursework requiring dichotomous/taxonomic keys.

Compensation

  • $4,017 per month to begin, plus room, board, and travel from Seattle to and from job site.
