World Hunger Relief Mission Statement
World Hunger Relief, Inc. is a Christian organization of volunteers and professionals who are committed to the alleviation of hunger around the world. Our activities include a 1-year agriculture missions internship, local education and outreach, and direct international assistance. Our 40-acre Texas facility is operated as a working farm, generating produce for consumption and sale, and provides a real-world setting for training activities.
Job Description
The Farm Operations Director is responsible for overall management of farm production, practical training of interns, and coordination of volunteer labor. WHRI farm operations currently include:
60-member fresh market community supported agriculture (CSA)
-Livestock enterprises (Grade-A goat dairy, poultry, rabbits & bees)
Certified Organic pecan orchard
Food crops (grains & legumes) for demonstration and farm consumption
The Farm Operations Director will plan, coordinate and implement these enterprises in coordination with the Executive Director who serves as his direct supervisor.
Specific Duties Include:
Develop and Implement long term plan for sustainable management of farmland
Implement practices that enhance the health of the land including:
o tillage methods
o long-term fertility management
o water management (drainage & irrigation
o long-term weed management
Oversee implementation of research efforts supporting development of above practices
Develop and implement crop rotation plan for each field
Provide leadership for volunteer Farm Operations Committee for evaluation, planning and networking purposes
Manage intern and volunteer labor
Coordinate and schedule farm work for interns and volunteers
Coordinate intern livestock chores
Identify need for and hire wage laborers
Plan and schedule intern management of volunteer work groups
Cover weekend needs on an on-call basis in rotation with other staff Training
Utilize work times to reinforce intern training concepts
Serve as a resource for intern enterprise management and special projects
Primary mentor responsibility for 2 interns involved in CSA and livestock enterprises:
o participate in quarterly plans of study
o meet monthly to review progress
o meet weekly to discuss priorities
o develop annual plan for each enterprise
Participate in formal lesson teaching as needed
General(The Farm Operations Director is not expected to perform all of these duties, rather to see that they are being done, using volunteers whenever possible)
Purchase supplies
Maintain greenhouses
Manage demonstration gardens
Maintain roads
Maintain grounds (lawns & landscaping)
Maintain all farm equipment
Qualifications Of The Ideal Candidate
A committed Christian with a desire to help the poor
3-5 years practical experience in sustainable agriculture production
Interest in agricultural practices appropriate to the developing world
Experience supervising groups and individuals
Good verbal communication, motivational and supervisory skills
Interest in learning through applied on-farm research
Good organizational skills A team player
Compensation
The salary range will be $25,000 to $30,000 depending upon needs and experience. Benefits include health insurance stipend and on-site housing may be available.
