Description

Redefining Progress is a nonprofit, nonpartisan economic and environmental policy organization based in Oakland,CA. We work with a broad array of partners to shift the economy and public policy towards sustainability. RP is currently seeking interns in our work to create a just and sustainable economy.

We aim to provide interns with the rewarding and challenging experience of being an active participant in the shaping of public policy, social change, and a new vision of progress where everyone enjoys a high-quality of life that is within the means of nature.

Internships are scheduled according to program director and intern convenience, but roughly follow the academic semester schedule. We accept both full-time and part-time interns, with a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week for three months (Some programs prefer a longer commitment).

At the present time, RP only offers unpaid internship opportunities. Internships are currently available in both our Oakland (all internships) and Washington, D.C., (Sustainable Economics internships only) offices.

COMMON ASSETS

The Common Assets program seeks an intern with excellent writing, verbal, and interaction skills. The intern will write short case studies on common assets to be posted on the web. The intern will also be responsible for interacting with and maintaining the Common Assets Alliance, a group of organizations from multiple sectors (economic development, environmental, fiscal responsibility, and environmental justice among others) dedicated to stopping the cooption of and disinvestment in our common assets.

SUSTAINABILITY INDICATORS

Education Intern

Redefining Progress is seeking an intern to help develop two new education outreach projects:  the Ecological Footprint Education Program and the Climate Justice Training Curriculum project.

The Ecological Footprint education program is centered on an exciting new project funded by the EPA that aims to disseminate sustainability into California schools. The education intern will help with organizing educator workshops that train teachers to integrate the Ecological Footprint concept into history and social studies curriculum for grades K-12. This internship will be primarily administrative but ensures that the intern will be able to teach to audiences ranging from kindergarteners to educators.

While climate change affects everyone on the planet, it places a heavier burden on low-income, people of color, and Indigenous communities by compromising their health, imposing financial burdens, and causing social and cultural disruptions. The EJCC uses popular education as one strategy to organize these communities toward the creation and implementation of just climate policies. To this end, the EJCC has created a Climate Justice Training Curriculum. The intern will help this curriculum.

Intern duties include:

*  Coordinating educator workshops around the state of California.
*  Assisting in training teachers at workshops.
*  Field testing lesson plans by teaching in classrooms.
*  Making improvements to the dissemination model for both projects (including aligning curriculum to science standards and networking with universities to develop ties).
*  Research communities affected by climate change, develop contacts, and participate in trainings.

Regional Sustainability Intern

Help develop and apply tools to analyze municipal progress toward sustainability, working with local and regional planning resources. Analyses are based on local and regional applications of the Ecological Footprint and Genuine Progress Indicator. Experience and education in the fields of public policy, urban planning, environmental science/studies, and similar subjects would be good preparation for this internship. Interest in/experience with regional land use planning and policy is also important
