Position Overview:

We are seeking to fill a tenure-track faculty position as Assistant/Associate Professor or Practitioner in Residence in the Department of Technology and Environmental Design beginning August 2014.

Responsibilities:  

  • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate level courses related to sustainability and renewable energy technologies in the Appropriate Technology program and expand the professional contacts of the program in the renewable energy industry.
  • Other responsibilities include maintaining an active scholarly agenda, advising students, participating in service work, and improving student and research labs.
  • Practitioner in Residence position would not require an active scholarly agenda, but would have a greater emphasis on teaching and service activities. 

Qualifications: 

  • An earned doctorate in a related field of technology, science or engineering is preferred; however, ABD candidates will be considered at the rank of Instructor for up to two years.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with 1) experience in the design, installation, commissioning, and performance testing of renewable energy systems 2) demonstrated teaching experience, and 3) an active research agenda demonstrated by journal publications and/or external research funding.
  • Candidates with Appropriate Technology experience, but with no doctoral program work, will be considered if they have an Engineering Master's degree and professional licensure.
  • In addition, candidates with significant work experience, a record of accomplishment, and an established national reputation in some aspect of Appropriate Technology, and a Master's degree in a related field, but with no Engineering Professional licensure, will be considered for a Practitioner-in-Residence position.  

Additional Information:

The Department of Technology and Environmental Design offers seven undergraduate programs with over 900 majors and a graduate (Masters) degree program with 5 concentration areas and approximately 50 majors. It is one of the largest and most dynamic departments on Appalachian's campus.

The Appropriate Technology program, with over 200 undergraduate students and 40 graduate students, is nationally known for the quality of its educational programs, research activities, outreach efforts, and other project work related to the field.

Facilities include a small wind research and demonstration site, a solar testing lab, and multiple biofuels research labs. Students and faculty in the program were active participants in the Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon 2011, which won first place in People's Choice, second in Communications, and third in Architectural Design. In addition, the Department has won more EPA P3 awards than any other university in the nation. Compensation: Compensation and rank commensurate with experience and qualifications.
