Background:


Ballard Power Systems is looking for an experienced External Affairs Advisor based in
Washington, DC to join our Corporate Communications team. Ballard, founded in 1979, is
recognized as the world leader in developing, manufacturing and marketing zero-emission proton
exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells for use in transportation, electricity generation and portable
power products. Fuel cells are widely viewed as viable alternatives to conventional technologies.


Duties:


This position, along with our Senior Advisor, External Affairs, will be responsible for increasing
Ballards profile with government and non-governmental decision makers in the Eastern US. As
the sole team member in Washington D.C., you will also act as Ballards Corporate
Communications presence for the East Coast of the United States.


Specific responsibilities include:

  • building and maintaining relationships with federal, state and local governments;
  • initiating,
    maintaining, and strengthening relationships with trade associations and various environmental and
    non-governmental organizations;
  • pursuing specific projects, policies, and funding requests on behalf
    of Ballard;
  • and representing Ballard at trade shows, conferences, and public relations opportunities.


Qualifications:


The person we are seeking has knowledge of legislative and political processes ideally from
experience gained working as a staff member in Congress. We prefer a legal or public
administration background along with a relevant degree (e.g., MBA).

Your impeccable
communication, negotiation, persuasion, and facilitation skills will allow you to work with diverse
interest groups at all levels of organizations. As Ballards only employee based in Washington, you
must also be proactive, independent and resourceful as well as have strong organization and time
management skills, because you will be working within a Ballard team whose members are spread
throughout the world. Most importantly, we want a professional with boundless energy and a
passion for alternative energy to represent our interests and our future.
