~ Earthwatch Institute is an international non-profit organization that supports field research worldwide in ocean health, cultural heritage, climate change, and wildlife and ecosystems. Earthwatch supports field research that utilizes highly motivated non-specialist volunteers, also called citizen scientists, to collect data. ~
Position Overview
As an intern in the Field Research Expeditions department you would assist with a variety of tasks relating to recruiting volunteers to participate in citizen science and experiential learning trips, with a focus on high school aged groups.
Responsibilities
Internships offer training in a variety of tasks and provide individuals an opportunity to be part of an exciting and dynamic team. This position focuses on key sales strategies including lead generation, lead prospecting, and market research. Internship responsibilities may shift with seasonal needs of the Field Research Expeditions department.
Responsibilities may include:
- Lead Prospecting via online research, identify:
- high-achieving high school science teachers
- high schools with strong science programs for potential partnership
- high schools with robust student travel programs
- top Masters of Education programs for secondary science teaching
- professional development groups for teaching environmental science, sustainability & student research
- zoos and aquariums with student volunteer programs
- Assisting partner high schools in developing local fundraising opportunities
- Data entry of leads collected from conferences, events, and online research
- Planning and coordination of volunteer outreach events (e.g. conferences, clubs and businesses)
- Conduct market research on similar programs offered at target high schools
- Researching industry best practices for group outreach
- Assisting with the editing of critical documents for student group expeditions.
- Supporting the Group Expeditions Coordinator with administrative tasks associated with fielding a group team (e.g. prepping and sending receipts, processing bookings and payments and tracking recruitment)
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Interest in environmental education, non-profit business development, student travel, and environmental research
- Strong desire to take part in the Earthwatch mission
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Experience writing and editing
- Demonstrated flexibility, initiative, resourcefulness, and collaboration skills
- Ability to multitask while staying organized
- Detail-oriented and a team player
- Sense of humor!
Additional Information
Earthwatch interns can take part in the Intern Credit Program in which they receive credits to use towards a qualified Earthwatch expedition and are invited to participate in all Earthwatch activities.
Although three or more months are preferred, we require a minimum commitment of one month and 120 hours. We also encourage use of the internship for academic credit, thesis, or practicum work towards degree or certificate programs.
We are only able to accept-Massachusetts based applicants into the program, or those with a confirmed place to stay within commuting distance to Boston. Applicants must currently be eligible to work in the United States. All interns are required to have individual health insurance. Placement will be subject to qualifications and availability.
