In this quiet landscape, a group of ranchers and business people came together in 2003, to found the North Fork John Day Watershed Council (NFJDWC). Their mission was, and remains today, to plan, fund and implement projects that enhance and sustain a healthy upper John Day Basin, strengthen the long term economic stability of those who rely on the Watershed's natural resources, and support Tribal cultures.

The Council employs 6 year round staff and hires up to 60 seasonal employees as well as contracting and partnering with numerous businesses and organizations. We are centered amidst three iconic National Forests, one National Monument, and many miles of scenic rivers. Our work is intimately tied with a grand landscape of steppe, forest, and high desert. We seek someone who will thrive in this grand, quiet scenery!

Position Overview

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for North Fork John Day Watershed Council's staff, programs, development, relationships and mission. S/he will have and develop deep knowledge of field procedures, core programs, business operations, and business plans.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Management:

  • Oversee 5 full-time and 50 seasonal staff
  • Ensure excellence in rigorous programs and consistent quality of finance, administration, fundraising, communications, and operating systems
  • Oversee complex funds with diligence
  • Actively engage partners and funders
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors;
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain North Fork John Day Watershed Council's staff team
  • Maintain an entrepreneurial spirit and always present a professional Organization
  • Support a vigorous safety program

Fundraising & Communications:

  • Expand revenue generation and fundraising
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications
  • Create external relationships to garner new opportunities

Planning & New Business:

  • Design new program directions
  • Establish new relationships with funders and political and community leaders

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or experience in Natural Resources
  • Passion for rural cultures and resources
  • Outstanding Communication Skills, both verbal and written

Compensation: Salary Range $45,000 to $65,000.
