Position Overview
The Executive Director of AERO is a full time, professional staff person who is accountable to the Board of Directors and has the responsibility to provide executive oversight for all aspects of AERO's operations. The Executive Director is the primary face of the organization and must be able to effectively articulate and inspire engagement in AERO's mission, goals, and vision for our region.
Responsibilities
The Executive Director's work will include:
- Responsible for leading and managing all aspects of AERO's operations, including fundraising, program development and management, communications, administration, financial management, and board direction;
- Setting a sustainable and overarching programmatic and financial strategy for the organization and advocating effectively for its mission; and
- Building partnerships and relationships with organizations and members across the state and broader region.
Fundraising (40%):
- Responsible for development and execution of an annual fundraising plan, in partnership with the board of directors, to ensure the health and growth of the organization;
- Be the primary public face of AERO and effectively articulate and inspire engagement in AERO's vision;
- Write, track, and complete reporting requirements for funding proposals to foundations, corporations, and government agencies;
- In partnership with the board of directors, build effective partnerships and relationships with organizations and members across the state and broader region, including:
- Establish and maintain relationships with funders;
- Approach, cultivate, and solicit major donors;
- Create and maintain ways to listen and be responsive to members and funders; and
- Help to develop and broaden sources of funding for general operations.
Program Development and Management (20 %):
- In partnership with the board, strategically plan and evaluate AERO's overarching programmatic strategy;
- Work with board, staff, and members to develop, implement, and evaluate innovative programs and activities;
- Ensure that programs and activities fulfill AERO's mission, meet the needs of members and move us towards our vision;
- Build a strong and effective staff team that will integrate programs and projects and develop new initiatives; and
- Be creative, solutions-oriented, and entrepreneurial - identify needs and, in partnership with the board of directors, take advantage of new programmatic opportunities.
Administration and Financial Management (20%):
- Responsible for financial integrity of the organization in conjunction with the board of directors and bookkeeper;
- Develop and implement a board-approved, balanced annual budget;
- Plan and support staff professional development and team-building activities;
- Manage the organization to attract and retain strong staff and volunteers by acting as a leader, member, and partner of a team of professionals;
- Effectively hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff, contractors and consultants;
- Conduct regular and systematic performance reviews with staff;
- Oversee the entire organization, ensuring that the board, members, and staff interact productively to develop and carry out priorities; and
- Oversee office operations and administrative systems and ensure they are efficient and up to date.
Communications, Outreach, and Member Services (10%):
- Responsible for public relations including media contacts and communication with members and the public; and
- Responsible for the production of newsletters, printed materials, website, events, and the annual meeting.
Board Governance (10%):
- Responsible for communicating effectively with the board of directors and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information and training necessary for the board to function properly and make informed decisions;
- Assist the board in the development and implementation of an ongoing strategic plan;
- Work with the board and board committees to develop work plans, policies and procedures;
- Assist the board to enhance involvement and ensure continuity and high productivity; and
- Serve as the board liaison to the staff.
Qualifications
- The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree or equivalent experience and at least 5 years of progressive and relevant nonprofit work experience, with some at a management level.
- The successful candidate will be someone who is passionate about AERO's mission and legacy and who is a demonstrated entrepreneurial, solutions-oriented, dynamic, energetic and visionary leader who is excited about leading AERO forward.
- A working knowledge of and commitment to issues relating to renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, local food systems and community self-reliance being undertaken at the national and regional level.
- Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with diverse groups and build and maintain relationships with a broad range of people, including members, funders, media, Board of Directors and staff.
- An understanding and demonstrated knowledge of budgetary and financial management.
- Proven fundraising and grant-writing skills and success; knowledge of and experience in building a major donor program and cultivating major donors.
- The ability to articulate, advocate, and promote AERO's mission and vision.
- Demonstrated achievement in creating innovative and distinctive programs.
- Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Computer skills, including database management and GiftWorks.
- Commitment to creating a culture of connection through grassroots action and community-based leadership.
- Confident, positive and comfortable in the public arena.
- A management style characterized by integrity, transparency and collaboration.
