The Zero Waste Alliance is a national leader providing assistance to industry and organizations for development and implementation of standards, tools and practices that lead to a more sustainable future through the reduction and elimination of waste and toxics.
The ZWA was founded in 1999 as a program of the International Sustainable Development Foundation (ISDF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation based in Portland, Oregon. ISDF was founded in 1997 and has 3 programs: The Zero Waste Alliance; The Green Electronics Council; and the US Secretariat for the China US Center for Sustainable Development.
The central focus in each of the ISDF's programs is the importance of sustainable design to achieve a society where commerce, communities and nature can thrive in harmony. These 3 programs are developing and leading new initiatives that include the internationally recognized standard for green electronics, EPEAT, and the growing sustainable schools movement.
Position Overview:
The Zero Waste Alliance is seeking an individual who will bring seasoned expertise and a passionate commitment for a sustaining world to lead ZWA to its next dimension of success. The ZWA Executive Director is a member of the leadership team for the International Sustainable Development Foundation and will work closely with the Board of Directors to chart a successful course for ZWA and ISDF. This is a full time, salaried position with full benefits.
In its first 10 years, ZWA has delivered measurable results on waste and toxics reduction, product stewardship, green building, environmental and sustainability management systems and cross cutting training. ZWA lead the development of the internationally recognized Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) that is now being used in the US and 40 other countries.
The retirement of the founder has created this opportunity for the right person to lead ZWA into its future. This is an opportunity to direct and grow this internationally recognized initiative that is making real change toward a more sustainable future!
Responsibilities:
- Program Development: responsibility to develop a next dimension strategy and lead ZWA through a transformation to a new level of service.
- Project Development: responsibility for development and funding of new projects and initiatives consistent with the mission and goals of the ZWA.
- Program Management: responsibility for administrative management of ZWA including budget and cash flow, proposals for grants and contracts, and cost and pricing models for products and services.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements
- Knowledge of sustainability and a passion to help society achieve it.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
- 5 years experience at director/manager level responsible for an organization or major program.
- Ability to:
o Communicate effectively
o Nurture and maintain relationships
o Participate effectively in an executive leadership team structure
o Identify and analyze alternative business models
o Develop and carry out organizational strategy
o Manage multiple projects
o Manage core business functions, and contract compliance.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Successful experience with grant funding through foundations and the federal government.
- Successful experience with grant management and governmental financial management requirements including federally negotiated indirect cost rates and cost allocation plans.
- Experience managing and growing a non-profit organization.
