Urban & Northern Options help people improve the environment and save money by using energy and other resources more efficiently.

Position Overview:

The Executive Director is responsible and accountable for the overall management of Urban and Northern Options, and reports directly to the Board of Directors to further the mission, programs, and activities of UO and NO.

Responsibilities:

1. Work to establish UO and NO as one of Michigan's leading and authoritative voices on energy efficiency and sustainability.

2. Guide and support the work of the diverse constituency of UO and NO.

3. The candidate will be responsible for facilitating the development and implementation of strategic long-range plans and daily UO/NO activities, including ongoing programs and arising opportunities.

4. Responsible for developing long-term and annual budgets.

5. Responsible for preparing budgets to be approved by the UO Board of Directors, for providing comprehensive accounting and reporting for all organizational spending; and for overseeing membership recruitment and development.

6. Seek out and pursue fundraising opportunities, including grants and other sources of income in order to ensure the long-term continued financial security of UO/NO.

7. Establish and maintain contact with current and potential donors, foundations, governmental agencies, strategic partners, and members.

8. Work to inspire and maintain the confidence of the Board of Directors, staff and membership of the organization.

9. Attract, develop, and retain highly qualified employees and develop a productive, self-motivated, and positive work environment.

10. The candidate will be responsible for the overall supervision of the UO/NO staff.

Qualifications:

  • The qualified candidate should have an advanced professional or academic degree as well as 4+ years in grant writing and program management.
  • A nonprofit environment background is preferred.
  • Must possess demonstrable leadership skills, creativity, and innovation in previous and/or current position(s).
  • This position requires strong management skills with administrative/organizational experience in a leadership role within the field of energy conservation and energy efficiency (or closely related field).
  • The applicant should have knowledge of budgeting and finance as it relates to nonprofit environments.
  • Must have a demonstrated capacity for leadership and the ability to build relationships with other organizations across the lower and upper peninsulas of Michigan.
  • Willingness to travel between the upper and Lower Peninsula would be necessary.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to act independently, and capability to make high-level decisions on behalf of the organization is required.
