Beyond War is an international non-profit organization whose vision is to build a world beyond war. The current office is staffed by an Executive Director and a .75 FTE administrative assistant. The Board of Directors sets policy and makes key decisions for the organization. The current Board has 7 members: 3 from Eugene, 1 from Corvallis, 1 from Portland, 1 from Medford and 1 from Ventura, California. The Board meets monthly by teleconference and holds an annual retreat. 

Functions of the Executive Director Position 

The Executive Director manages the organization under the direction of the Board of Directors. S/he looks at the "big picture" and works with the Board to assess and respond to the needs of Beyond War, the organization. A critical dimension of the role is to continually assess the appropriate function of the central office in relation to "working together with others" to build a world beyond war. The organization aspires to a "horizontal" structure, effectively coordinating efforts of active participants working collaboratively across a broad geographic spectrum. 

Outreach and Recruitment:

* Often serves as spokesperson for the organization in responding to requests for information
* May travel to spread the message of Beyond War; Coordinates responses to requests from the media or others on request
* Works as needed to support the outreach strategy of the organization. 

Communications and Membership Support: 

* Encourages and empowers Beyond War members to be involved
* Oversees planning for annual meetings, quarterly meetings and other membership meetings as needed
* Coordinates communications with members through newsletters, e-mail, telephone and mail
* Coordinates with BW leaders regularly, encouraging and supporting participation throughout the organization. 

Budget and Fundraising: 

* Responsible, with the Board, for the fiscal health and accountability of Beyond War
* Works with the Budget Committee to develop and propose the annual budget
* Oversees expenditures and income and keeps the Board informed
* Enlists participants for and participates with the BW Fund Raising Committee to design and execute effective fund raising plans and follow up
* Writes or oversees grant proposals and reports on grant deliverables
* Engages in other development activities as appropriate 

Materials Development and Production: 

* Oversees development, production and distribution of Beyond War materials
* Coordinates with graphics, website and other consultants
* Serves on or supports committees working on materials, such as curricula, DVD and CD production, and other materials being developed. 

Operations and Management

* Supervises staff and some volunteers
* Staffs the Board meetings; works with Board members and committee chairs to prepare and distribute agendas, other materials and briefing packets for Board meetings
* Works with the President and others in Board development
* Monitors BW programs and projects, including the work of committees
* Responds to conflicts that arise in the organization, staying congruent with the "DNA" of Beyond War 
* Manages the Beyond War office, purchases supplies, equipment, services etc. within the authorizations granted by the Board.

Experience and Qualities Desired 

We are seeking an Executive Director who understands and embraces the foundational ideas and the personal implications of Beyond War. Experience in working in or management of non-profit organizations is preferred. Experience and education that demonstrate his/her capacity to undertake the functions outlined below will be the primary criteria for selection. The applicant's ability to work with a young and quickly evolving organization, his/her ability to communicate well orally and in writing, and his/her facility with electronic media will also be evaluated. 

Beyond War is seeking applicants for the position of Executive Director of the organization on a .75 FTE basis, salary range $30,000 to $37,500. Enlarging the position to full time will be an option in the future.
