The Roots of Change (ROC) Fund is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization in supporting California's transition to sustainable food and farming systems that support healthy local economies, ecosystems, and communities throughout the state.
The position requires a creative, dynamic, and seasoned leader who will work with the Roots of Change Council, funders, and other partners to evolve and implement an agenda aimed at achieving an ambitious vision for systemic change in California's food and agriculture systems. This vision is described in a recently released report entitled The New Mainstream, which is available along with accompanying research online at www.rocfund.org and www.vividpicture.net.
The Roots of Change Fund is a foundation collaborative supporting work to catalyze the transition to healthier food systems and a healthier environment in California. The ROC Fund aims to increase the human and financial resources devoted to this issue and strengthen this emerging field. The goal of the ROC Fund is to transform California food systems by identifying and providing funding for high-leverage opportunities to support the transition to sustainable food systems. The ROC Fund is working systemically to address a variety of issue areas related to California's food and agriculture system. Presently, the ROC Fund is developing the short-, medium-, and long-term strategies to implement systemic change over the next generation, by the year 2030.
Description of Position and Responsibilities
The ROC Fund is seeking a candidate with a strong commitment to sustainable food and farming systems in California and a proven record in leading successful organizations and/or businesses. The Executive Director will be required to lead a highly focused, disciplined, efficient, and agile organization with complex moving parts. The Executive Director will manage the process to evolve the strategic vision for sustainable food systems in California. The Executive Director will communicate and engage with culturally and economically diverse audiences, and will be an effective liaison between multiple stakeholders, including policymakers, community advocates, business leaders, labor leaders, and food producers.
Key areas of responsibilities include:
* Administering strategic planning and program development;
* Acting as chief contact person for the organization and spokesperson of The New Mainstream, a strategic vision for achieving a sustainable food and farming system;
* Leading all fundraising efforts, including foundation, major donor and government grants;
* Planning and managing a highly focused grantmaking program;
* Integrating key field research, and the work of ROC funded projects into all action plans;
* Managing staff, implementing staff evaluation, and encouraging staff development;
* Identifying and implementing a communications program and an evaluation program; and
* Managing budgets, completing financial reporting.
The Executive Director reports to the ROC Council - the advisors to the ROC fund - that includes leading food system activists, businesspeople, labor representatives, academics, and funders.
Required Qualifications
The ROC Fund Executive Director will be an effective and dynamic leader for the organization and will work in partnership with ROC Council members, funders, project directors, and many other leaders in the sustainable food and farming community. The ROC Fund Executive Director will be a strong leader who is able to facilitate the development and emergence of other leaders in this field. The Executive Director will be comfortable working in a streamlined organization with a small staff that relies on building partnerships with volunteers and other leaders in the field to achieve its goals.
The successful applicant will have the following minimum qualifications and experience:
* An established leader in the food, farming or sustainability fields;
* Proven development skills raising funds from foundations, government, business, and/or individuals;
* Experience leading a significant social change effort or business;
* Experience leading a multi-stakeholder effort;
* A consensus builder;
* The ability to work with a variety of community leaders and professionals, ranging from scientists to business leaders;
* A demonstrated understanding of sustainability concepts;
* California-based experience;
* An excellent speaker;
* Proven leadership skill;
* The ability to focus on both the big picture and the small details simultaneously;
* Ability to work closely with the ROC Council, workgroups, ROC funded project leaders and others as champions of the strategic vision; ? Willingness to travel to meet with staff, foundations, donors, and allies;
* High standards of integrity, good sense of humor; and
* Embraces cultural and economic diversity.
Additional Desirable Qualifications: Advocacy experience with state and/or federal government; and Experience in starting up/growing a business or nonprofit organization.
