Brookline GreenSpace Alliance is a nonprofit open space advocacy and education organization formed in 1987. The mission of the organization is to preserve, protect and enhance the open spaces of Brookline, Massachusetts. 

Brookline GreenSpace Alliance seeks an Executive Director to work 60% time and lead our organization as we continue to expand our open space advocacy and education efforts.

Under the direction of an active Board of Directors, the Executive Director will design and implement environmental education activities and community programs, be a spokesperson for open space advocacy, and work to assist and support "park friends groups" throughout the Town. Working with the Board of Directors, s/he will lead the Brookline GreenSpace Alliance to advocate for an increased level of land protection and for sufficient funding for park and open space maintenance in the town of Brookline.

Brookline is a community with a heritage of open space stewardship and an engaged citizenry; advocacy and education efforts in our exceptional community require a sophisticated understanding of the interface between advocacy and public policy.

The Executive Director will be solely responsible for the general management of the organization and will work with the Board to raise sufficient funds for annual operations.

Duties:

Advocacy

Attend evening meetings of Conservation Commission, Park and Recreation Commission and other relevant meetings as needed. Develop strategy, in association with Board, Town Planning Department, and elected officials, to pass green space related zoning recommendations from the Comprehensive Plan and initiate funding mechanisms for land protection in Brookline. Participate as BGSA representative on town committees and other projects as needed. Advocate for appropriate annual Park and Open Space Budget.

Outreach and Communications

Work with Communications Committee to produce regular publications, update and improve web site, and compose and send regular email updates to listserve. Write relevant articles and work with other writers to publish regular GreenViews column in Brookline TAB. Organize Annual Meeting event for members.

Green Umbrella Services

Support and encourage the formation of Park Friends Groups and provide training, services and networking opportunities as needed.

Environmental Education and Community Programs

Organize field trip program for the general public; host community meetings on topics related to open space, and implement other educational activities as directed by the Board.

Administration and Management

Schedule, organize and document Board and sub-committee meetings. With Board input, develop annual goals and budget for the organization. Maintain files, order office supplies, maintain computer equipment and software, maintain e-mail list serve. Receive and process donations, pay bills, manage payroll and annual budget, produce quarterly financial reports; work with accountant to produce annual 990 and MAPC form. File appropriate quarterly and annual payroll tax forms and payments. File appropriate annual forms with Attorney General's office. Maintain insurance policy and information.

Fundraising

Write, produce and coordinate mailing for annual appeal/membership drive. Work with Development Committee to plan and organize annual fundraising event and to develop a major donor fundraising program. Write fundraising grant proposals.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated interest in/commitment to park and open space issues.    
  • Previous relevant work experience.    
  • Bachelor's degree.    
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office products and use of the Internet.    
  • Familiarity with database applications (FileMaker), accounting software (QuickBooks), desktop publishing software (Publisher) and PowerPoint.    
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.    
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.    
  • Fundraising expertise.    
  • Must be able to attend evening meetings on a regular basis and weekend events on an occasional basis.    
  • May need to use personal vehicle for transporting mailings or event materials on an occasional basis.

Compensation:

  • Annual Salary of $22,464 with potential to increase with growth of the organization.    
  • 50% individual health care benefit.
