The stunning mountain community is experiencing rapid growth in population and visitation. Land and water conservation on private agricultural lands and on public lands is an urgent challenge. Area citizens are supportive, having passed a cutting-edge ballot measure in November 2018, funding healthy lands, waters, and wildlife.

Position Overview

Central Colorado Conservancy is seeking an innovative and dynamic Executive Director to build on steady growth and regional impact within the current strategic plan. The opportunity is based in Salida, Colorado; known as the Heart of the Rockies.

The Executive Director will connect an exceptional board, talented staff, and an engaged community to deliver solutions, both traditional and new, to the regional conservation challenge of our time – managing the impacts of rapid growth in the heart of the Rockies. The role will focus on developing and leading collaborative programs, inspiring the community, managing the organization (a Nationally Certified Land Trust) and continuing to grow diverse funding streams and supporters.

The Executive Director is the chief executive officer of the nonprofit corporation, with direct control of the business and supervision of its employees. Candidates should have at least 5 years of progressive leadership experience in a non-profit, for- profit and/or public sector organization.

Qualifications

We are looking for an action-oriented leader with:

  • Passion for the Conservancy’s mission - To protect the lands and waters sustaining our quality of life as Central Colorado grows - and the desire to make a lasting difference.
  • The ability to inspire and connect team, community, agencies and local government to develop collaborative solutions.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with a team, board and partner organizations.
  • A track record of success in growth, building diverse funding streams and supporters/members.
  • Ability to manage staff, contractors, partner relationships and finances and familiarity with regulations applicable to nonprofit organizations.
  • Conservation acumen to leverage existing tools, and to create new approaches, that protect land, support agriculture, and manage the impacts of growth to natural resource health.
  • Desire to be part of a fun, innovative, can-do organizational culture.

Basic skills should include:

  • A bachelor’s degree with an advanced degree preferred, familiarity with software packages (Microsoft Office, donor databases, QuickBooks etc.);
  • Ability to pass background checks;
  • Lift 50 pound objects;
  • Hold a driver’s license; and
  • Willingness to travel across the Conservancy’s service area.

Additional Information

Location Central Colorado Conservancy is based in Salida, Colorado. The region is well known for its outdoor recreation opportunities, including: skiing, hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, big-game hunting, kayaking, and rafting. Chaffee County has 15 of Colorado’s 14,000 foot mountains and the most-rafted river in the world. Salida routinely tops Outside Magazine’s list of best towns in the United States. This is a high-impact position in a strong team and a beautiful setting.

Reporting and Compensation

The Executive Director reports to the President of the Board of Directors and is a full-time position. Compensation is competitive and based on experience, with some benefits available.
