Old School is seeking an Executive Assistant/Intern to play a key role in the launch of our new education and digital media business.
Old School is the go-to source for inspiration and education on all things “Hands-On.” When someone thinks of getting back to the basics and wants to create or fix something herself (think: homemade chocolate liqueur, backyard chickens or building a bookshelf), she will visit Old School first for its mix of beautiful inspiration, clever entertainment and truly social learning.
Launched in early 2012, Old School taps into the booming “Hands-On” market segment, providing digital media and in-person learning to this rapidly growing audience. Highly curated digital content and in-person classes allow subscribers to connect with their inner drive to create in multiple ways:
- Motivation: A daily email, site, and mobile/tablet app inspire subscribers to explore new hands-on projects.
- Learning: Online Videos and How-to Guides, and in-person, on-demand local classes provide a forum for localized connection.
- Sharing: An online Barter Marketplace and robust social networking create a space to share and collaborate on an ongoing basis for a subscription fee.
This contractor position reports directly to the CEO. While the position is a work-from-home role, weekly in-person meetings are expected, and preference will be given to candidates based in San Francisco.
Responsibilities:
May include (but are not limited to):
- Personally assist the CEO and CLO (Chief Learning Officer) with relevant aspects of the startup business
- Research the Hands-On market (DIY, Foodie, Crafter, and Urban Homestead)
- Reach out to appropriate media venues to promote press about the company; assist PR contractor with pulling together materials to pitch stories
- Assist with seeding stories in social media outlets
- Work with the Marketing Manager to negotiate, implement and manage cost-per-acquisition marketing initiatives (ie: via ShareaSale) to promote efficient email subscriptions
- Beta test Old School product and provide feedback
- Evangelize Old School products and distribute marketing materials
- Fact check editorial when appropriate
- Research and find photos to accompany editorial
- Upload editorial and advertising creative into the Content Management System
- Respond to customer emails and requests, act as first point of contact for Old School to the public
- Assist with scheduling class offerings
- Interface with designer and marketing team, assisting them on projects
- Ad hoc projects as assigned by CEO and CLO
Qualifications:
- Self-starter who can work independently and efficiently
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Solid knowledge of either the DIY, Foodie, Crafter or Urban Homestead movements
- Strong MS Office skills
- Must own a smartphone and have familiarity with mobile apps
- Familiarity working with Google docs
- Marketing knowledge/experience a plus
- Digital media knowledge and startup experience a plus
- Strong desire to be in on the ground-floor of a startup business
- Ability to take an ever-shifting workload and responsibilities in stride
- College degree required, good attitude a must
Compensation: Starting at $2,500/month for full-time work. Note: this role expected to morph to salaried position with benefits and stock options in later 2012
Must have own laptop, with MS Word, Excel, PPT
