ArborGen is well-established as the leading supplier of seedlings to the global forest industry. Underpinning the Company's operating business is its product development capability for developing and commercializing the next generations of high value seedling products using both conventional tree improvement methods and advanced genetic technologies.
Position Overview:
The person in this position will plan and coordinate the conventional eucalyptus breeding and testing program for ArborGen including:
- germplasm acquisition,
- test establishment,
- tree breeding and intraspecific hybridization,
- data collection and summarization.
This person will plan and coordinate the field testing program for biotech eucalyptus lines developed by the ArborGen Science Team. The Project Leader will also provide a leadership role in the development of short-rotation woody crop systems applicable to ArborGen pine and hardwood germplasm including loblolly pine, slash pine, eucalyptus, poplar and sweetgum.
Responsibilities:
- Develops efficient field testing programs for seedling and clonally propagated eucalyptus species.
- Analyzes, interprets and summarizes field test data.
- Designs breeding plans and conduct breeding activities for intraspecific crosses and interspecific hybrids.
- Interacts with customers and collaborators in the development of biomass production systems including the design and establishment of research experiments, data collection and analysis and technology transfer to customers.
- Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses.
- May supervise and evaluate the performance of one or more field support personnel.
- Supports marketing and value selling of ArborGen existing and new products.
- Demonstrate leadership in safety by example and suggestions for company-wide improvements.
Qualifications:
- Master of Science degree or higher, with at least 1 degree in forestry with an emphasis in tree breeding and genetics and a minimum of 2 years forest research experience are required.
- Experience with eucalyptus forest management and tree improvement desired but not required.
- Experience with short rotation woody crop production systems and general knowledge of bioenergy crop management is also desired.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Proven communication skills (written and verbal).
- Balance between strong experimental design and exceptional execution.
- Demonstrated ability to carryout different roles in a team environment (leader or team member).
