~ The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is a bi-county agency empowered by the State of Maryland in 1927 to acquire, develop, maintain and administer a regional system of parks within Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, and to provide land use planning for the physical development of Prince George's and Montgomery counties. In addition, the Commission gained responsibility for the public recreation program in Prince George's County in 1970. ~
Position Overview
The Montgomery County Department of Parks of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is seeking an Environmental Sustainability Coordinator to become part of our award winning team.
The Coordinator will play an important role in serving as a resource on environmental initiatives; perform advance professional planning work requiring considerable complexity, responsibility and technical expertise. The Environmental Sustainability Coordinator will act as the primary contact with the external community regarding sustainable practices and provide leadership in the development of a countywide sustainability plan.
The Environmental Sustainability Coordinator will provide technical guidance and expertise to other staff working on the Sustainability Committee and action teams and will serve on other committees to better serve the County in pursuit of sustainability and to fulfil the mission of providing an efficient and cost effective waste reduction and recovery program to protect the environment and preserve natural resources.
The successful candidate will be assigned project leadership and coordination responsibilities as well as independent work assignments and contribute their expertise as part of other projects or work teams. Performs other work related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Examples of Important Duties:
- Coordinates policies on climate change, energy use, water conservation, recycling, transportation choices, greenhouse gas emissions, and building design and serves as a resource for employee and community education.
- Proposes sustainability initiatives to implement within the sustainability plan.
- Plans, coordinates and conducts extensive research, marketing and educational efforts to promote sustainability and environmental awareness and initiatives among the public, trade associations, businesses, institutions and other government units.
- Analyzes data and prepares reports relative to environmental and sustainability projects.
- Develops content and maintains web presence.
- Partners with other departments to define issues, processes, and priorities to develop a sustainability plan in accordance with Practice 6-40.
- Works with departments and divisions to identify and develop demonstration and pilot projects.
- Identifies and assists in the preparation of grant applications; secure funding for special studies; prepares requests for proposals (RFP); participates in the selection of contractors and consultants; prepares project budget estimates.
- Represents the department on advisory boards, work groups and intergovernmental committees related to sustainability. Performs other related work as required.
- Provides guidance to the Department on sustainable issues for master plans, functional plans, and planning studies.
- Prepares annual program reports that measure progress using established indicators.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, management, or related subject; and
- Six years of progressively responsible administrative experience related to the needs of the department to which the position is assigned; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
