Description
Pitzer College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level for a naturalist or human ecologist to join our interdisciplinary program in Environmental Studies. We seek candidates whose teaching and research interests consider relationships among the biological, the cultural, the social, and the personal. We seek a scholar/activist who mixes a scientific perspective with the social sciences and humanities.
Candidates should bring a natural history orientation to the study of social and physical ecology. The ideal candidate will be able to create teaching and research opportunities that involve the Pitzer Arboretum (www.pitzer.edu/about/pitzer_resources) and the Claremont Colleges' Bernard Biological Field Station (www.claremont.edu/org/bfs/). The person will work in a program that values international and intercultural perspectives and the bridging of traditional boundaries to achieve insight about humans and our relationship with the world. Particular areas of interest to Pitzer College include environmental justice and ethics, ethnobotany, cultural diversity concerns within both scientific ecology and the environmental movement, and environments of Southern California. A Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant discipline is required.
Pitzer College, a member of the Claremont Colleges, has a strong institutional commitment to the principles of diversity in all areas and strongly encourages candidates from underrepresented social groups. We favor candidates who can contribute to the college's distinctive educational objectives, which promote interdisciplinary perspectives, intercultural understanding, and concern with social responsibility and the ethical implications of knowledge and action. Applicants interested in Native American Studies are strongly encouraged to apply. Pitzer College is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. For the successful applicant with relevant interests, affiliations are possible with the intercollegiate departments of Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Chicano/Latino Studies, and/or Women's Studies.
Applications will be considered until October 15, 2002 or until the position is filled. Send a letter describing your educational philosophy, teaching and research interests, a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, writing samples, and other supporting materials to: Alan Jones, Dean of Faculty, Pitzer College, 1050 N. Mills Ave., Claremont, CA 91711.
