POSITION #43010594

WATER RESOURCES,
DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

PAY GRADE 26, MINIMUM $40,102.40 - $71,219.20

This is advanced, independent professional work managing the scientific component of a watershed restoration and protection program for the 600-square mile Orange Creek basin within the lower Ocklawaha River system in north-central peninsular Florida. Goals of the approved Orange Creek Basin Surface Water Management Plan are to restore and maintain the basin’s natural hydrology to the extent practicable and desirable, to restore and protect aquatic and wetland communities and their habitats, to protect and enhance surface water quality in three large shallow subtropical lakes and their tributaries and adjacent wetlands, to rehabilitate and maintain fisheries, and to enhance recreational and aesthetic values.

Responsibilities include: design and implementation of scientific projects identified in the OCB Management Plan; initiation and management of contracts to produce high quality scientific work on schedule and within budget; maintenance of environmental sciences information to provide a clear scientific program status and history; and coordination with the Orange Creek Basin Advisory Council, interagency partners, and other basin stakeholders as needed to meet program goals.

Requires knowledge of limnology; wetland ecology; water quality; environmental and water-resource restoration and management; project management; contract management; database management, and GIS.

Requires skill in experimental design; statistical analysis and results presentation; communication; and conflict resolution.

Requires ability to refine and condense scientific data and information to determine the best-supported solutions to resource management issues; successfully manage and coordinate aspects of large-scale basin management projects while communicating the status and progress to stakeholders

Working conditions include some fieldwork in wetlands and on lakes and creeks in adverse weather conditions of heat, humidity or cold.

Qualifications include: a bachelor's degree in biology, limnology, chemistry, botany, environmental science or related field and six years professional experience in the environmental field. A master's degree in biology, chemistry, limnology, botany, environmental science or related field can substitute for one year of the experience described above. A doctorate in biology, chemistry, limnology, botany, environmental science or related field can substitute for two years of the experience described above. Professional experience in environmental protection or research can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
