Work With East Bay Youth As a Science Research Instructor:
The East Bay Academy for Young Scientists (EBAYS) runs free after-school, summer and enrichment programs for under-resourced youth of color with a focus on community-based scientific research. Our research projects aim to address environmental and social justice issues that are relevant to the participants. Some examples include studies on particulate matter in air, and heavy metals in drinking and fresh water. Our primary goals are to facilitate the development of critical thinking, problem solving and scientific research skills in order to develop young leaders.
Position Overview:
Our instructors work with groups of youth for a year or more, and work with elementary and secondary students on developing their inquiry and research skills. Instructors also help develop curriculum that fosters environmental and energy literacy through relevant and hands-on activities.
Our instructors often work in teams to teach courses. Courses typically take place twice a week, and are 1-2 hours each session. Instructors are paid for in-class time as well as preparation and planning time for each class (typically equivalent to in-class time). Instructors are also paid for transportation time from our offices at the Lawrence Hall of Science (UC Berkeley) and the schools where we work in Oakland and Richmond.
Qualifications:
- Experience working in youth development or youth education fields.
- Experience in scientific research and ability to develop research projects that are relevant to participant communities.
- Can independently develop curriculum and lead lessons and research projects that meet program goals and build youth leadership skills.
- Committed to working with under-resourced youth who may initially be unenthusiastic toward education and science.
- Skill in organizing and managing a classroom of up to 20 students.
- Fluency in environmental quality, environmental justice and health issues.
- Can work with a team of instructors to develop a solid teaching collective.
Compensation: This position will begin as a part-time contract position at $15.09/Hour, and can develop into a full-time position ($2625/month) with benefits at UC Berkeley depending on experience and performance.
