Position Overview

The City of Austin seeks an Environmental Program Coordinator to be part of the Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Program team under the Transportation Systems Development Division of the Austin Transportation Department.

Under the direction of the TDM Program Manager, this position will focus on community facing TDM programming, policy, and environmental mitigation strategies.

Responsibilities

Duties may include:

  • Lead community facing education and outreach on use of sustainable transportation options, including: website content management of a new TDM website, seasonal TDM messaging (e.g. Spring Festival season, Back to School, Bike to Work Month, Dump the Pump Day), coordination with target audiences like schools;
  • Lead education and outreach on transportation mitigation strategies that improve air quality, such as anti-idling;
  • Key team member on Bloomberg’s American Cities Climate Challenge – project will be focusing on utilizing Bloomberg’s expertise to improve upon existing TDM programs such as Smart Trips Austin and Mayor’s Mobility Challenge (e.g. applying behavioral theory to adjust program implementation);
  • Implementation lead on Mayor Pro Tem Garza’s resolution on increasing public transit usage through incentive program;
  • Implementing high priority, near term TDM, Air Quality, and Climate action items coming out of the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan;
  • Technical advisor / reviewer for Special Event Ordinance (mobility plan requirement), Econ Development Ch380 policy (TDM plan requirement), Downtown construction workers ordinance (development of TDM requirements), Austin Energy Green Building Certification (collaboration on TDM strategies);
  • TDM liaison for the Austin Core Transportation Plan (formerly the Downtown Austin Mobility Plan);
  • Future funding/partnership pursuits for TDM – public health collaborations, research collaboration (TTI/UT), CAMPO call for projects; and
  • May assist with other Austin Transportation Department projects as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent writing and language skills, especially as it relates to education and storytelling;
  • Strong experience in communications (especially web based) on transportation and environmental topics;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, social media and web-based marketing applications, and WordPress;
  • Familiar with and has personal experience using transportation options including: walking, bicycling, transit, dockless mobility options, rideshare, and other sustainable transportation tools and programs;
  • Enthusiastic about transportation, environment, and helping the community;
  • Experience with transportation and transportation demand management policy on a local, regional, or federal level;
  • Experience with TDM program development, management, and/or implementation;
  • Understanding of behavior change concepts;
  • Familiarity with transportation guidelines from the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), and others;
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment, with changing priorities; and
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner with internal and external team members and stakeholders.

Education:

  • This position requires graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field  related to Environmental Science, Life Science, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, Business Administration, Planning, plus six (6) years of experience in a related field.
  • A Master's degree may substitute for experience up to two (2) years.
  • Related experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years.
