Description

The Conservancy of Southwest Florida is a 6,000 member
not-for-profit conservation organization founded in Naples, Florida, in 1964.

 The purpose of this position is to provide research, policy analysis, and advocacy for the Conservancy Policy Division on water resources, water quality, and environmental restoration issues pertaining to estuaries and coastal watersheds in Southwest Florida.

Duties:

  • Reports to the Director of Environmental Policy
  • Compiles data on the health of estuaries in Southwest Florida, evaluates the data and drafts reports and other documents on the health of estuaries and major problems with estuaries.
  • Reviews and comments on proposals for development projects that impact estuaries and coastal watersheds, including working with applicants, and commenting on Water Management District permits, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permits, and local land use planning approvals.
  • Appears before local government bodies and state agencies to provide oral comments.
  • Reviews and comments on draft lists of impaired waters in the region as proposed by Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Identifies flowways and coastal wetlands for public acquisition and restoration.
  • Participates in committees established for restoration projects involving estuaries and coastal watersheds in Southwest Florida.
  • Interface with Conservancy Science Department on projects that involve research and monitoring in estuaries and coastal watersheds, including volunteer monitoring programs.

    Qualifications:
  • Strong commitment to the conservation of biodiversity, environmental quality, and natural resources.
  • Bachelor's degree required in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or related field.
  • Some experience in water quality and/or water resource policy and regulation through prior advocacy, government agency, or consulting experience.
  • General familiarity with water quality monitoring programs, methods, and parameters.
  • Strong computer skills, including word processing, internet, and database knowledge; basic knowledge of website design a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with individuals of diverse interests and backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Willing to work variable hours and to travel locally as necessary.
