Earthwatch Institute's mission is to promote sustainable conservation of our natural resources and cultural heritage by creating partnerships between scientists, educators and the general public. To realize this mission, Earthwatch Institute has three recognized areas of focus: Research, Education and Conservation. This year, Earthwatch will sponsor over 130 scientific field research projects in 49 countries and 18 American states, making estimated volunteer field grants of $3.7 million. 

Position Overview:

To manage and minimise the charity's environmental footprint across its international operations.

Responsible to:  International Head of Finance and Operations

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Earthwatch staff in the US and UK offices and affiliates to gather baseline information on existing environmental management policies and practices 
  • Design, develop and implement an Environmental Management System in line with ISO14001 for use by Earthwatch internationally, initially focusing on work undertaken by the UK and US offices
  • Convene and chair an Environmental Management taskforce with cross-office representation
  • Develop an internal audit programme, recruiting, training and coordinating internal auditors drawn from across the organisation.
  • Develop an ISO14001 certification strategy and manage its implementation, acting as the EMS management representative for the organisation.
  • Promote the continual improvement of environmental performance within Earthwatch offices and as part of our field research projects
  • Work with the charity's IT department in order to develop an appropriate system for recording, monitoring and sharing environmental data internationally
  • Work with the existing Carbon and Climate Change Management Group, Corporate Partnerships and Research teams to identify the most appropriate mechanism for achieving carbon neutrality
  • Provide quarterly update reports to the International Executive and Leadership teams
  • Design and develop a new-starter briefing document and work with the HR team and internal stakeholders to ensure all Earthwatch staff and scientists receive adequate training and communication in relation to the charity's environmental impact management
  • Provide the Communications team with updated information for the Earthwatch website
  • Maintain a network of contacts with similar post holders in other Environmental NGOs and Earthwatch's partner businesses in order to ensure the charity contributes to and shares best practice

Qualifications: 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree or post-graduate qualification in environmental management or environmental sciences
  • 1-3 years consultancy or in house experience managing and auditing EMS with relevant formal qualifications.
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 and relevant environmental legislation
  • Strong persuasive and influencing skills with the ability to coordinate projects internationally
  • Experience in project planning & management
  • Excellent communication skills- written and verbal
  • Ability to work autonomously and on own initiative
  • Team orientated, collaborative workstyle and able to build strong team spirit
  • Commitment to sustainability and an interest in conservation and environmental field research

Compensation: Recommend $40,000 to $ 45,000

Full time-1 year grant funded.

Position will start in Maynard but will be relocating to Boston at the end of April.
