Job Function:
Responsible for all matters of environmental and safety affairs at three resort operations operated by Xanterra Parks and Resorts in Death Valley National Park. Refine, implement, and maintain the environmental management system (EMS) and oversee all risk management programs.
Position and Purpose:

In the last several years, Xanterra has established itself as the industry leader in protecting and preserving the environment in more than 25 Xanterra operations in National and State parks and private resorts in settings as diverse as the Florida Everglades, Death Valley, Yellowstone, Crater Lake, Zion, Mount Rushmore, Bryce Canyon, Silverado Country Club & Resort and the Grand Canyon, among many others.
At these spectacular locations, Xanterra and its 8,000 employees provide superior guest service to visitors from around the world. The company operates 33 hotels and lodges with more than 5,140 guest rooms, 51 retail stores, 64 restaurants, transportation systems, and 1,800 campsites within national and state parks. Xanterra is seeking an Environmental Health and Safety Director for its Death Valley concession operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Environmental:
1. Implement, refine, and maintain the written environmental management system consistent with the ISO 14001 international EMS standard, as well as National Park Service (NPS) standards, working in conjunction with the Xanterra Corporate Senior Director of Environmental Affairs, the property General Manager, and pertinent government agencies.
2. Develop, implement and maintain Xanterra's Eco-metrics (resource-tracking) systems at the Death Valley operations.
3. Provide oversight and ongoing performance evaluations of the environmental management system and the NPS Concessions Environmental Audit Protocol in coordination with the General Manager, the Xanterra Senior Director of Environmental Affairs, and the NPS.
4. Work with the General Manager and the Xanterra Senior Director of Environmental Affairs to establish standards for departments in conservation and environmental goals in areas such as energy, water, solid waste, recycling, pollution prevention, transportation, hazardous materials and waste, and procurement.
5. Develop an environmental stewardship committee; hold regularly scheduled meetings and establish goals and objectives for the committee.
6. Work closely with Xanterra's Director of Environmental Programs and General Manager, corporate legal counsel to ensure legal compliance with all NPS, state, and federal environmental statutes and regulations including: SPCC, asbestos, RCRA and hazardous waste, UST/AST, Universal Waste, CFCs/Halons, lead-based paint, stormwater management, hazardous materials storage, and fuel dispensing compliance. This includes providing training to staff of regulatory changes affecting operations.
7. Analyze for effectiveness and improve Xanterra's Death Valley environmental projects, including sustainable design initiatives and cost impacts.
8. Measure impact of programs and prepare required reports for Xanterra at Death Valley, Xanterra's Senior Director of Environmental Affairs and National Park Service Concessions Management.
9. Other duties as assigned.
Risk Management:
10. Oversee Xanterra's Death Valley operations risk management and safety programs, maintaining compliance with federal, state, OSHA, NFPA, and NPS safety and health rules and regulations. This may include: administering property safety systems, including alarm systems, fire suppression, fire prevention, and guest/employee safety; investigating guest and employee accidents and injuries; conducting educational activities for all supervisors and employees; directing internal safety inspections; developing safety committees; and implementing a written Hazard Communication and respiratory protection programs. Administer follow-up and prescribe means to reduce exposure and risk of further loss.
11. Develop and implement company's documented safety program in conjunction with respective National Park Service safety program.
12. Develop and implement training and awareness programs in areas such as environmental stewardship, hazard communication standard, workplace safety, labeling and MSDSs of hazardous chemicals, personal protection procedures, respiratory protection, and emergency planning and response procedures.
13. Implement procedures and conduct inspections to identify and correct safety deficiencies in environmental and safety programs. Monitor regulatory developments and communicate changes affecting company operations to appropriate personnel.
14. Maintain records and reports for compliance with all agencies having jurisdiction, including National Park Service, OSHA, State of California, etc.
15. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's Degree in Environmental management, environmental health, or related field.
2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in technical writing and public speaking.
3. Experience with EMS development, ISO 14001 certification, and environmental auditing.
4. Well-developed information systems management skills.
5. At least two years of environmental management experience.
6. Experience in developing environmental initiatives and implementing all phases of a company-wide environmental program.
7. Proven analytical skills in assessing cost effectiveness, cost savings, program effectiveness and program compliance.
8. Well-developed management information systems skills.
9. Possess or able to obtain a valid Driver's License.
Appearance Standards: The position shall follow the appearance standards as outlined in the Xanterra Parks & Resorts Appearance Standards Policy.
Reporting Requirements: The Director of Environmental Health and Safety will report to the General Manager of Xanterra's Death Valley operations, and will report secondarily to Xanterra's Corporate Senior Director of Environmental Affairs.
Location and Timing: Full time, year round in Death Valley National Park. Position to start September 2005 or sooner.
