The Anacostia Watershed Society is a local, non-profit environmental organization located in Bladensburg, Maryland, in the Washington, DC metro area. Through our environmental education programs, we teach watershed education in area classrooms, lead field trips on the Anacostia River, conduct teacher trainings, and more.

Position Overview: 

We are looking for an Environmental Educator who inspires, informs and motivates youth of all ages and demographics about the wonders and workings of the natural world as well as the particular workings of the Anacostia River Watershed. The Environmental Educator reports to the Director of Environmental Education Programs as well as the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Schedule and teach environmental education programs with schools and other youth groups; coordinate programming with education director, restoration team and the rest of the AWS staff
  • Lead canoe and pontoon trips on the Anacostia River, which includes: teaching about river wildlife and history; managing student behavior; and instructing and monitoring participant safety
  • Assist with and at times lead restoration activities including wetland plantings, invasive plant removals, and trash clean-ups
  • Maintain canoes, pontoon boats, trailers, vehicles and field study & classroom supplies as needed
  • Assist with teacher training, which includes: recruiting new teachers for the program; leading the training; gathering and assembling materials for teacher supply kits
  • Assist in investigating, creating, field testing standards-based watershed curriculum lessons
  • Assist with program evaluation and development
  • Provide support for other activities as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field and at least 1 year of experience
  • An interest in conservation and enthusiasm for the outdoors
  • Enjoy working with children of all ages, especially urban youth
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work including heavy lifting (50 pounds) and paddling
  • Must be flexible to work evenings, weekends, or longer hours when needed (compensatory time provided) in a dynamic work environment
  • Experience with Windows XP, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint); graphics and Web design experience (i.e. Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Dreamweaver) a plus
  • Mechanical repair skills and/or boat maintenance skills in addition to trailer backing skills a plus
  • Certification in national environmental education curricula (WET, WOW, WILD, etc.) a plus
  • Boating safety certification, Spanish language, familiarity with the Washington, DC metro area, experience with urban youth and poetry/art teaching skills also desirable

Compensation: Competitive salary, commensurate with the candidate's level of relevant professional experience. Benefits include insurance, retirement plan, and paid leave. This full-time position is available immediately.
