Description
Background:
Located on the banks of the Neuse River in coastal North Carolina, the Coastal
Communities program at Don Lee Center is a residential outdoor environmental
education program that meets North Carolina standard course of study
requirements for students in grades 4-8, although groups range from ages K-12.
Duties:
The program focuses on water quality issues, coastal ecology, flora and fauna of
the coastal plain, and natural history. Most groups visiting will participate in a 3
day/2 night program option, and instructors are required to work with the groups
for day and evening programs, but are not required to stay in cabins with kids. It
is a five day work week, with 2 days off per week. Additional seasonal
opportunities may exist for summer and/or fall program.
Qualifications:
- Degree in natural sciences, education, or recreation required;
- Previous
experience in outdoor education desired; - internships available for those with
higher education but no degree. - Good organizational, interpersonal, and
facilitation skills required. - Willingness to work long hours with youth;
- enthusiasm,
sense of humor, patience and self discipline; - 'team player' residing in a
cooperative living/work environment. - Experience sailing and/or canoeing
desirable.
Compensation:
Starting salary of $250 per week; room and board are provided; Medical
coverage-liability; limited sickness and accident insurance; Workman's
Compensation.
The position begins February 24th, and is contracted through
May 17th, 2003.
