Internship Description:
Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary offers two different environmental education internships. Three-month internships (March-June; September-November) offer undergrads or grads an opportunity to gain additional experience in the field of environmental education, specifically, in designing and leading their own classes for a wide spectrum of audienceschildren, families, school groups, community groups, and the general public. Our eight-month internship is designed to offer an experience of environmental education from multiple points of viewteaching to different audiences, working with different content, program design and evaluation, and program administration. The goal of these internships is that interns leave with solid experience, as well as opportunities to reflect on the field of environmental education.
Duties:
As an intern at Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary, you will work with a team of educators at Mass Audubon learning about the many different programs and educational opportunities that we offer. At Drumlin, we provide environmental education to diverse audiences in many different habitats. After a comprehensive training, you will be expected to co-teach with teacher naturalist mentors. After some practice, you will lead your own environmental education programs. You will also be expected to assist education staff revising and designing curriculum.
Additional responsibilities include general program support including: teaching evening programs, upkeep of education facilities and equipment, and designing your own internship project. The eight-month commitment will give environmental education interns an opportunity to meet many other educators and scientists at Mass Audubon in order to learn more about how Mass Audubon works toward protecting the nature of Massachusetts.
Qualifications:
- Environmental Education, environmental studies, life science, education major or recent grad, plus interest in environmental education, sustainable agriculture, and conservation.
- Enthusiasm for the teaching outdoors and working with children ages K-8.
- Ability to work and learn in a team setting.
- Self motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible.
- Previous teaching experience gives candidates an advantage.
Compensation:
$175-$200/week. On-going training in environmental and natural history. Housing, utilities, and board (farm fresh products) is provided at an additional $25/week.
College internship credit possible, depending on institutional guidelines.
