Description
~ At the McDowell Environmental Center, our curriculum is more than a walk in the woods although it may start there. ~
We believe experiential classes help students to better understand the natural world, leading them to a sense of responsibility for it. Focused on basic ecological concepts, the curriculum is hands-on and our classroom is the great outdoors, giving students the greatest opportunity to learn about themselves and their environment.
Topics covered can include:
- Forest Communities
- Map & Compass
- Water Ecology
- Earth Science
- Group Dynamics
- Canoeing
Position Overview
Located in the heart of Alabama, Camp McDowell is home to the McDowell Environmental Center - a wonderful place to live and work!
At MEC, Environmental Education Instructors will enjoy classrooms without walls spread out over 1,140+ acres in which you will teach groups of up to 12 students from a variety of age levels and backgrounds on topics that include forest, insects and wildlife ecology, earth and water science, nature journaling, Native American history, map and compass skills, low and high ropes facilitation, full day hikes and canoeing.
Positions are available during the spring (early February to mid-May) and fall (late August to mid-December)
Responsibilities
- Each week you'll also have the opportunity to lead evening programs that may include night hikes, astronomy, and campfire programs.
- Adapting lesson plans to match your teaching style and program development is also encouraged.
Qualifications
- Applicants must have a bachelor's degree
- A fondness for getting your hands dirty
- Must have maturity, initiative, a sense of humor, flexibility and team spirit
Compensation: Compensation includes a stipend starting at $275/week, meals, private rooms with shared kitchen, laundry and living space (including screened-in porch with rocking chairs!), WiFi access, and an intensive two-week staff training.
