Are you interested in teaching children about themselves and the nature that surrounds them? Fairview Lake YMCA Camps is a year-round residential outdoor education program that focuses on hands-on experiential education and outdoor courses for children in grades 2-8.

Fairview Lake is located in the Northwest corner of New Jersey surrounded by 660 acres of swamp, forest and fields. We also reside on a mile long lake, our name sake. With the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and the Appalachian Trail right in our backyard, our ability to educate and explore is boundless. We are only an hour and a half drive to New York City!

Position Overview:

Fairview Lake YMCA Camps is seeking Environmental Education Instructors. Positions are available for this fall (September - Thanksgiving). There is also the opportunity to work multiple seasons, each with additional responsibilities.

Responsibilities: 

  • Fairview Lake Environmental Education and Conference Instructors will teach pre-approved academic curriculum for ecologies;
  • Facilitate the team-building course;
  • Lead campfires and night hikes;
  • Environmental Education classes are a major portion of lessons led, however, some recreational activities like boating, climbing wall and orienteering occur regularly; and
  • Everyone will also lend a hand when it comes to projects; a few examples being - fixing equipment, upkeep of cabins and wood splitting. 

Qualifications:

  • College degree in Environmental Science/Recreation preferred;
  • A love of children, the desire and ability to teach while working in the out-of-doors (rain or shine) is required; and
  • Being self-motivated, flexible and patient daily is vital.

Compensation: Benefits include a base rate of $8 per hour (rate varies with experience), housing and meals, as well as two weeks of training on-site.
