We are a Marin County-based non-profit organization with a 14-year history.  Through funding from federal, state, municipal, private foundations and other clients, Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI) supports under-served populations, such as school districts, colleges/universities, local governments, and affordable housing providers and residents, to embrace a sustainable future through green building, clean energy, resource efficiency and related technologies, programs and initiatives.  Our staff work closely within teams to support each other on projects and to creatively develop new and effective models.   

Position Overview: 

Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI) is seeking volunteers to support our work in each of our primary focus areas:  Eco-Smart Education, Green Housing, and Sustainable Communities. 

This is a part-time, unpaid position, based out of our San Rafael, Marin County Office.  Volunteer applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with volunteer position start dates to be negotiated on an individualized basis.

Responsibilities: 

Volunteer Needs and Associated Responsibilities by Sector:

Eco-Smart Education (K-12):

  • Assist in creating/editing videos for teachers about climate protection and energy conservation
  • Develop and refine curriculum in sustainable agriculture, alternative transportation, renewable energy, and behavioral change
  • Compile and analyze energy, water, waste, and transportation savings data from current school programs.  Support school efforts to reduce consumption.  

Eco-Smart Education (Colleges):

  • Support and help to promote our Community-University Sustainability Partnerships (CUSP) between campus and municipal partners.
  • Track, analyze and translate climate, energy and workforce impacts of students working on campus and community greening efforts.
  • Assist the higher education team in preparing presentations for regional and national conferences and webinars.

Sustainable Communities:

  • Climate Corps Bay Area Training Programs:  Help develop training programs for 30 energy and climate projects with AmeriCorps members throughout the Bay Area
  • Home Energy Retrofit Occupations (HERO) program implementation: Support implementation of an innovative recruitment and engagement tool for home performance contractors
  • Small Cities Climate Action Partnership: Support energy management and climate protection activities for 7 small cities in the SF Bay Area
  • New Program Development:  Assist with new program development through strategic planning, grant identification and writing, and refinement of Sustainable Communities communications materials

Green Housing:

  • Green Retrofit Program Implementation: Assist with implementing, documenting and advancing work of green retrofit programs that may include data entry, analysis of options, outreach and education and research and reporting
  • Support Green Housing team to develop green resident and property management training materials and services
  • Support Green Housing Program Director to research, prioritize and pursue community foundation opportunities to fund affordable housing programs

Qualifications:

Generally, SEI volunteers will posses a basic familiarity with the Internet and the Microsoft suite of office automation software (e.g.: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)  Qualified candidates will also evidence strong written and verbal communication skills, in addition to the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline, environmental studies, or related field or equivalent work experience;
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of 150 hours over the course of a 3-month period.

Compensation: SEI currently seeks candidates to fill unpaid volunteer positions with significant skill development and networking opportunities.
