Position Overview:
The Energy Data Specialist is responsible for delivering existing services and working with the Sustainability Project Manager to develop new services to support Guilford College’s sustainable design, construction, and operations projects across campus, including new construction and major renovation sustainability consulting, LEED certification management, building commissioning, energy auditing, energy conservation measure project management, existing building operations and maintenance support, and facilities staff training.
Qualified applicants will be able to assume primary responsibility for projects, specifically sustainability consulting and LEED certification and management, immediately upon joining the team with very little training required.
Reports to Sustainability Project Manager.
Responsibilities
- Manage projects (LEED certifications, capital project consulting, building commissioning, energy conservation measure project management, etc.) including keeping schedules and budgets, ensuring delivery of quality consulting services, and acting as primary contact for Guilford College clients
- Develop new or grow existing services for the team including LEED EB certification, energy management, existing building commissioning, etc.
- Develop and deliver green building design, construction, and operations educational materials to Guilford capital project and operations staff and outside consultants
- Present lessons learned and best practices at conferences and seminars to help promote Guilford’s sustainability efforts and share our experiences with a larger audience
- Review mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings and recommend opportunities for increased efficiency and reduced environmental impact
- Perform energy management calculations to support the business case for green buildings and help quantify the effectiveness of programs
- Produce regular Green Building Tip of the Month documents summarizing promising new technologies at Guilford and explaining their applications
- Lead sustainability design charettes and goal setting meetings
- Supports green building design standards, including introducing standards to project teams, reviewing energy models and life cycle costing results, and facilitating the integrated design and life cycle costing processes
- Support the Sustainability Project Manager and VP of Administration as they seek to secure new contracts including drafting proposals and meeting with clients to sell services
- Provide green operations and maintenance best practice guidance including building specific recommendations
- Write and publish case studies on completed efforts and articles for website
- Help train new employees, develop professional development materials for the team, and review the work of others to provide constructive feedback
Qualifications:
- At least 5 years professional experience with the LEED certification process, energy management or design engineering, or sustainability consulting with a demonstrated ability to work independently, manage projects and staff, and promote energy efficiency and sustainability;
- BS / BA degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, energy management, facilities management, architecture, or related field - advanced degree preferred;
- Demonstrated experience teaching courses or speaking publically (i.e. conferences) about sustainable building;
- Demonstrated interest and knowledge in the green building field as shown through volunteer, committee work, and/or published writing;
- Direct experience designing, operating, or optimizing building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and building automation systems preferred;
- Familiarity with the LEED Rating Systems, IPMVP, ANSI WSIP, ASHRAE Commercial Building Energy Audits, ASHRAE Guideline 0, ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 62.1, ASHRAE 55, and related green building related standards and guidelines;
- Demonstrated attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities;
- Excellent writing and editing skills;
- Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced, continually adapting work environment;
- Excellent communication skills, with the capacity for developing and maintaining strong client relationships across a highly decentralized university management structure;
- Demonstrated interest through course work, professional experience, or volunteer efforts in sustainability and/or addressing the ecological impacts of building design and construction;
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new technical skills quickly and efficiently;
- Professional experience in construction administration, specification writing, and construction documents and drawings is preferred;
- Current LEED® Accredited Professional and/or AEE Certified Energy
- No more then 3 years post graduation from undergraduate or graduate program
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to climb stairs or ladders and routinely walk between buildings. Must be able to bend, stoop and kneel for extended periods. Required to use/wear safety equipment and/or clothing when appropriate.
Technology Skills Required:
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Project, Visio, Access, and PowerPoint, and Autodesk AutoCAD, and the ability to learn software such as Revit, eQUEST, Energy Plus, Photoshop, etc.
