Description

The Site Stewardship Program is a community-based habitat restoration program that works throughout the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The program is dedicated to the ecological restoration of high priority natural areas, especially those with endangered species. The work is accomplished with the support of community members, particularly students who participate through on-going educational partnerships developed with local schools. Lessons in environmental education are interwoven into the service and restoration work undertaken on behalf of the park.

Intern Responsibilities / Duties: The Site Stewardship Program has developed a summer job program (LINC) for high school students who have an interest in the environment and are looking for an opportuninty to work in the park. During this six week summer program, students work on authentic park projects, while learning job and leadership skills. The Education/Restoration Intern will provide support for this program during the months of June and July. This will include assistance with planning and coordination of program, providing leadership and mentoring, engagement in all program activities, and support with transportation. The Intern will also plan and lead teambuilding and environmental education activities, which are designed to build self-esteem, leadership and environmental awareness. 

Fall responsibilities will center on the organization and facilitation of education and service projects for local schools with the support of Conservancy staff. In addition, aintern will learn how to plan and develop workday activities for weekly volunteer programs in selected sites within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. All activities will focus on ecological habitat restoration using a service-learning model. Intern is expected to work well with students in a variety of situations, which may include in-class presentations, hands-on field work, or work in one of the park's native plant nurseries. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

· Enthusiasm about working with students and environmental education
· Interest in ecological restoration and the National Park Service
· Ability to work well within a team and take a leadership role as needed
· Desire to work both outdoors and indoors
· Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
· Ability to speak in front of a group 

Desired Qualifications: 

· Environmental education experience
· Habitat restoration experience
· Experience and/or desire to work with culturally and economically diverse people
· Computer experience in word processing and database operations
· Bi-cultural / bi-lingual skills
