Description
Smokey House Center is a nonprofit organization that partners with public schools to provide adolescents with a hands-on, natural resource-based curriculum that integrates academic disciplines. At Smokey House, young people work with experienced adults on agriculture, conservation, ecological research and forestry tasks -- learning, in the process, science, math, communications, reading, writing, problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. We offer two applied-learning programs -- our Youthwork Program for at-risk high school students and our Environmental Field Studies Program for mainstream and at-risk middle students. Both programs integrate academic and personal skills into work-based experiences.
Responsibilities:
Education interns will create, facilitate and assess applied learning experiences for middle and high school students. After an initial orientation/training session, you will spend several weeks working with staff and students in each of the two Smokey House education programs.
Initially, you will observe the staff as you work side-by-side with a work crew or research team. You will work closely with experienced educators as you learn to integrate academic and personal skills development into work-based experiences. As you become more comfortable with the students and tasks, you will begin to lead the students in their work and learning and assist in evaluating and documenting the students' progress. Throughout your internship, you will participate in establishing group expectations that create a safe, healthy and productive working environment.
Spring internships generally run from late February to late May or early June. Summer educational internships run from June to mid-August.
Qualifications:
Genuine desire to work with youth, driver's license in good standing, good oral and written communication skills, willingness to work outdoors in heat and cold, wet, snow, and swampy, buggy conditions (though not usually all in the same day). Some background in the natural sciences, carpentry, forestry, or agriculture is helpful.
