~ ShoreRivers seeks to protect and restore Eastern Shore waterways through science-based advocacy, restoration, and education. ~

We have a dedicated staff of educators, scientists, restoration specialists, and advocates focused on policies and projects that will improve the health of our rivers. Our staff also includes four Riverkeepers who regularly patrol and monitor our waters and serve as key spokespersons.

Position Overview

ShoreRivers seeks a full-time Education Programs Manager to assist in the development, coordination, and delivery of environmental education programming to public and private schools as well as education events with community partners. The ideal candidate will be an energetic, creative, and outgoing individual who is enthusiastic about environmental education and knowledgeable about Maryland public school education requirements.

The Education Programs Manager reports to the Director of Education. The Education Department creates and delivers programming that directly supports the organization’s mission to restore and protect Eastern Shore waterways by supporting scientific school curriculum, providing curriculum that meets Maryland graduation requirements, leading teacher professional development in watershed education and issue investigations, and cultivating students as future river stewards.

This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position starting as soon as an applicant is selected, but ideally by or before December 1. The applicant must be flexible to work within school day hours and occasionally evenings or weekends. The applicant must be willing to live in the communities we serve, travel frequently throughout the Eastern Shore for school visits and field trips, and travel between regional offices in Chestertown, Easton, and Galena. ShoreRivers offers a competitive benefits package and a salary range between $45,000-$50,000, based on experience.

Position Responsibilities

  • Communicate directly with school science coordinators and partner teachers to develop curriculum, schedule school visits and field trips, and support student action projects.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Education to develop and deliver teacher professional development opportunities focused on local watershed science including land-use and water quality issues, solutions, and outdoor and environmental pedagogy.
  • Serve as an educator in ShoreRivers’ high school and elementary school programs which includes leading in-class and online lessons as well as outdoor field experiences throughout the school year.
  • Assist the Director of Education in identifying and writing grants that support education programs, teacher professional development, and student action.
  • Oversee and assist teachers in managing student action projects that may contribute to water quality restoration projects, watershed advocacy, outreach and education campaigns, among other student-driven ideas.
  • Recruit, train, and manage education volunteers to support in-class and on-campus lessons as well as field experiences.
  • Develop and facilitate classroom and outdoor field activities that align with Next Generation Science Standards and local county curriculum.
  • Contribute innovative ideas and energy to regional and state-wide environmental networks that seek to advance knowledge and best practices in the environmental education field.
  • Contribute to general community engagement efforts, including tabling at events, developing school program newsletters, and producing ShoreRivers outreach materials like fliers and social media posts.
  • Support colleagues in delivering on the ShoreRivers mission with professionalism and passion.

Position Requirements & Qualifications

  • The employee must have a strong commitment to environmental protection and to ShoreRivers’ mission.

Experience & Education:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in an education field or science, environmental or multidisciplinary studies.
  • A minimum of three years relevant teaching experience as a classroom teacher or non-formal education partner, and a working knowledge of Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience framework, Maryland Environmental Literacy Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards.
  • Experience in, or strong understanding of, grant applications, management, and reporting.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Capable of interpreting and describing complicated scientific information or data to a range of different audiences through a variety of different media.
  • Have strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple different school schedules simultaneously.
  • Be familiar with watershed science and concepts and equipment calibration.
  • Must be committed to advancing Diversity, Equity, Justice, and Inclusion (DEIJ) in the environmental and education fields. Must be committed to learning and implementing DEIJ best practices in environmental education.
  • Conversational Spanish-language skills are preferred, but not required.
  • Must be a team-player who is confident in sharing creative ideas and networking with volunteers, board members, teachers, and donors.
  • Confidence in non-motorized, small craft boating such as kayaking and canoeing.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., launch students in canoes, walk two miles, and then do it again the next day.
  • Must be proficient with MS Office including Excel and PowerPoint and confident in facilitating online platforms such as Zoom, Google Meets, Microsoft Teams.
